On Thursday, the Swedish king and queen welcomed the President of Finland, Alexander Stubb, and Mrs. Suzanne Innes-Stubb on a state visit. For this welcome and first day of events, Queen Silvia repeated a pink jacquard covered circular headpiece with open crown.

Suzanne for the win, even with two caveats: 1. Since the black hat blends with her black hair, (which is pulled back very severely) I’d think a colorful hat would have been even better. 2. I’m not a fan of her dress; it’s shorter skirt immediately reminded me of an attempt at a gone-modern Dominican habit. As an aside, I live very close to a Dominican friary, with its convent directly across the street. Often are seen the friars and/or nuns walking the neighborhood in full habit, sometimes playing ball with the kids. Reminds me of an old Bing Crosby movie.
Royals: bring on the fuller sized hats again, and keep the beautiful tradition alive! Headbands and small headpieces are for us regular folk.
I agree with Jake that Mrs. Finland’s hat is the best of the bunch! I may help that her dress is fairly simple letting the hat be the star! Sylvia’s head piece looks great in most of the pictures until you see it from the side. Then, you can tell it is an open back and the piece falls from its pedestal! I didn’t realize Victoria’s headpiece had a feather! That’s a plus for me. Too bad we didn’t get any photos from the right side or the back. Sophie’s is fine, but unremarkable.
It’s always interesting to see when non-royals wear hats with royals, and this time I’m calling Suzanne Innes-Stubb the winner! Being British-born may have given her an advantage, but this saucer hat is very flattering on her and trimmed well (although I do suspect it’s a RTW piece). Brava!
Silvia, Victoria, and Sofia all have hats and headpieces that have yet to be repeated, and this would’ve been a good opportunity to bring some of them back out. While nothing is offensive here, I’m also not excited by any of the headpieces worn by the Swedish royals, although I think Sofia’s my favorite ensemble overall.
Yes, Mrs. Innes-Stubb’s hat is definitely a ready-to-wear,factory made piece. I didn’t comment on it in the post because there’s not much to say- it’s a one-layer sinamay saucer. Fine but nothing exciting.
Between a handmade headpiece (like Crown Princess Victoria’s) and a RTW saucer like this one, I’d choose the handmade headpiece!
