Day 4 Of Dutch State Visit to Australia

King Willem Alexander and Queen Máxima moved on to Sydney today where their schedule included visits to the inner harbour and Opera House, Cockatoo Island, the University of Sydney and Government House.

For this less formal calendar of events, Queen Máxima repeated her modified calot headpiece in pinky-beige ruched straw.

This isn’t my favourite hat or outfit, but the balance of volume and colour is and pops of colour is good- the overall picture draws the eye in for a closer look at all its interesting pieces.  The neural hat and blouse work well with the bright skirt and necklace (clearly the stars here), allowing these pieces to shine. While I’m never going to be a great fan of orange clothing and accessories, I so admire how Máxima has embraced this important Dutch colour. Here, she wears it well.

I think most of us agreed that Máxima’s head to toe orange yesterday was a miss- what do you think about her mix of neutrals and pops of colour today? Does the small, neutral hued hat help or hinder this ensemble?

Day 3 of Dutch Visit to Australia

King Willem Alexander and Queen Máxima continued their tour of Australia today in Canberra where they visited the Australian War Memorial, the Afghan Memorial, and met with Prime Minister Malcom Turnbull and Mrs. Turunbull Parliament House. For this calendar of more formal events, Queen Máxima surprised in orange from head to toe. Her wrapped straw calot, first worn on a trip to Curacao in 2011, features a straw double half bow and feather quill. On its own, the hat is a whimsical and rather fun accessory but paired with this coral lace dress (with incredibly awkward pink lining) and all orange accessories, the ensemble is catapulted way over the top into “Apricot Pumpkin Spice Barbie” territory.

Many of us royal hat fans adore Queen Máxima’s bold and brave style and I suppose it’s inevitable with one as fashionably daring as she, that misses will occur. The ensemble was a complete miss for me, particualrly at today’s calendar of memorial visits but I would love to see this hat again (imagine it instead with a charcoal grey dress- so lovely!). What do you think of this hat and ensemble in Australia today?

British Royals Welcome Colombian State Visit

Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh welcomed Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos (recipient of this year’s Nobel Peace Prize) and Maria Clemencia de Santos to Buckingham Palace this morning to kick off a two-day state visit. The Queen repeated her frosty lime wool coat and matching hat with hourglass shaped crown (it also has a Pork Pie domed top visible during its last outing) and pale yellow-green straw upfolded brim. I suppose the use of a light straw brim, white silk peony trim  makes this felt crowned hat a good transitional one to wear between seasons but the fresh shade of green it reads so springy to me that need to remind myself we’re at the beginning of November (not April!).

The Duchess of Cornwall repeated a hat many of us have long been wishing to see again! Her teal green straw hat in a modified boater shape features a flat, straight sided crown and raised brim on one side. Trimmed with a wide hat velvet band, inverted edging around the brim and unique interlocking ring trim that contrasts with the simple lines of the hat, this design is a striking one. The colour is particularly beautiful on Camilla and makes me wish for her to integrate more jewel-toned designs into her millinery wardrobe. My only qualm about this ensemble is the blue dress which I’m not sure compliments the green hat and coat but I suspect in person, these colours coordinated more harmoniously than we see here.

Between these two green royal hats, I have an obvious favourite. What are your thoughts of the designs we saw to kick off the Colombian state visit today?

Day 2 Of Dutch State Visit to Australia

After a lacklustre millinery start to this week’s visit to Australia, Queen Máxima was back to her blazingly glamorous self today for the Melbourne Cup at Ascot Raceourse in Perth. On paper, a brown straw hat with simple embellishment reads as rather boring- something this hat is certainly not! In coffee coloured straw, the hat’s upswept ‘slice’ brim is a Máxima signature that is beautifully balanced with a simple rounded crown and monochrome grosgrain ribbon hatband that folds into a flat bow at the side. The hat’s simplicity is a perfect counterpoint to Máxima’s more elaborate beaded aqua Natan dress and the resulting ensemble is a dazzling success.

Amazingly, we have seen this hat already four other times this year, styled with a different ensemble each time. This masterful styling not only gives the hat such a fresh sense of new life each time it is worn, it keeps us royal hat fans happily on our toes. What do you think of its outing in Perth today?

Day 1 Of Dutch State Visit to Australia

King Willem Alexander and Queen Máxima kicked off their Australian visit (which will commemorate the 400th anniversary of the landing of Dutch explorer Dirk Hartog in Western Australia) today in sunny Perth. Queen Máxima repeated her sand and turquoise silk linen Matthijs van Bergen dress with matching folded calot hat. This is such a great dress, it’s a shame that this design resembles no more than… a dinner napkin? A head bandage? Whatever it is, I’m afraid, it is neither noteworthy nor attractive.

Thankfully we can all take heart that, from a millinery perspective, things can only improve from here.
