Swedish Monarchs Welcome Papal Visit

King Carl Gustav and Queen Silvia of Sweden welcomed Pope Francis today for a two-day visit to Sweden marking the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. The royal couple greeted the Pope at the Royal palace in Lund this morning where the queen repeated her vibrant purpley-blue brimless hat trimmed with black feathers.

While the shape of this design looks like a rounded pillbox from the front, the side view reveals it to be more of a calot with indented crown similar to a Pork Pie hat. The shape nestles nicely into Queen Silvia’s hairstyle and the vibrant colour (which is reported to be a royal blue despite taking on a very purple hue in many photographs) suits her very well.

This Week’s Extras

Royal Hats

Empress Michiko wore a quintet of saucer hats during a visit to Kyoto last Sunday through Wednesday (Imperial Family of Japan blog). The first, second and fourth hats all appear to be new designs. I love the lattice under brim on #1, the sharpness of the black and gold contrast of #2 and the softly romantic cream flower trim on #4.

Prince Takahito of Mikasa, the uncle of Emperor Akihito, passed away on Thursday at the age of 100. Members of the Imperial royal family visited his home later that day as well as for the first of several burial rituals on Friday (Imperial Family of Japan blog). You can read more about the late Prince and his interesting life at these articles from the Japan Times, Asahi Shimbun, Japan News, and The New York Times. His funeral is scheduled for Thursday next week.

Carina Axelsson shared this snap of an afternoon out choosing this year’s Christmas tree. She wears her chocolate wool fedora very well.

The Earl of Wessex looked very distinguished at the University of Bath’s 50th Anniversary (British Monarchy)

The Norwegian Crown Princely family was out in cozy hats last weekend, collecting support for the Norwegian Red Cross’ annual telethon fundraiser.

Such a lovely photo shared by Queen Rania this week

And finally… British royal photographer extraordinaire Chris Jackson shared this snap of several vintage editions of Paris Match magazine. The resemblance between the subject and his very popular ginger grandson is remarkable.

Dutch Monarchs Visit Almelo and Northeast Twente

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima paid a regional visit to Almelo and Northeast Twente yesterday during which the queen wore a familiar ruched turban in textured harvest gold velvet. The last time we saw this hat, I was less than complimentary… a stance I’m going to sheepishly contract now, based on this outing. Granted, the hat is still not among my favourites (and is still too reminiscent of a pincushion or brain to be considered truly attractive) but its styling yesterday with  Máxima’s teal dress, coat and statement earrings was simply brilliant. The bold ensemble makes the hat a complimentary touch (instead of a ‘sticks out like a sore thumb’ one) and the use of other caramel-gold accessories magically ties the outfit all together. If Queen Máxima is going to wear this hat, this is exactly how to wear it.

Not all was smooth sailing for Maxima, however, as this video shows. Even queens have difficulty conducting forest walks in heels.
I can only imagine the responses you have for my about-face turn on this hat (only in this context and with this ensemble) and can’t wait to hear them! What do you think- is my admiration for this ensemble completely bonkers?

British Royals Visit Poundbury

Urban planning is a keen passion of the Prince of Wales who has channelled this interest into the development of Poundbury, an experimental new town built on land owned by the Duchy of Cornwall on the outskirts of Dorchester in southwest England. Today, the Prince unveiled a statue of his beloved grandmother, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother (to whom the project is dedicated) in Poundbury town square, an event which saw his parents and wife join him not just for the unveiling but for a tour of the town he has tirelessly championed.

For this special visit, Queen Elizabeth repeated the sky blue felt hat trimmed with chrysanthemum feather flowers.she first wore for the christening of Prince George, three years ago. While much has already been said about this hat, I found myself warming to in in a new way today, thanks to the lovely view of its indented crown below. Yes, the feather trim is still awkwardly sparse and yes, the crown height is still a little clumsy but I can’t help feeling like the choice of this hat- a hat with very personal family connections to special little boys- was not a coincidence today. It seems just the right piece for an engagement with one’s eldest child that rings more than faintly of “Mummy, look what I made!”

The Duchess of Cornwall wore one of my favourite hats in her wardrobe, a royal purple velvet felt design with diagonally shaped brim and flat crown. The luxurious sheen of the felt is elevated with lavish trim that lightens the piece and gives it great dimension. With Camilla’s sequin collared suit, it is one knockout ensemble.

While images of the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh exploring the local Waitrose grocery store are wonderfully amusing (see here, here and here), my favourite snaps of the day were taken when the royal party popped into ‘The Duchess of Cornwall Inn’. The real duchess honoured her namesake by stepping behind the bar and drawing her beloved a pint of ale. The brand? Well, Hall & Woodhouse’s Badger “The Duchess”, of course.

Princess Mary Opens Emergency Hospital Wing

Crown Princess Mary opened the new emergency building at the Regional Hospital of Randers today. For this event, she repeated her grey felt casque hat with leaf trim. Her hairstylist always shows this hat off to great effect and its pairing today with her grey bouclé coat, black dress and burgundy gloves, clutch and shoes topped a beautifully styled ensemble.
