Swedish State Visit To Germany

King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia arrived in Berlin yesterday to begin a state visit to Germany. Not surprisingly, Queen Silvia used the occasion to debut a new hat. In camel coloured felt, the design features a rounded cloche style crown and wide brim, raised on one side and edged with a wide black stripe. The black stripe gives a great punch of contrast to the hat and I particularly like the dimension provided by rows of camel stitching on it. While worn a little lower on Silvia’s head than I would prefer, my main quibble about this hat is its pairing with this grey coat and dress. Mixing neutrals can work well but in this instance, I’m not such a fan.

Queen Maxima Opens Rotterdam Health Conference

Queen Máxima was in Rotterdam yesterday to attended the first day of the 5th European Nursing Congress themed around the topic of elder care. For this event, she repeated her large black velvet felt Garbo hat with curved brim. For a dramatic hat, the embellishment on this design is surprisingly subdued- just a curved quill and knotted grosgrain ribbon hat band. While the trim is low key, the scale and presence of this hat is most grand and on Máxima, it makes a dramatic and fantastic millinery statement.

This hat has already made it to our short list for favourite repeated design in 2016- what are your thoughts about it after seeing this outing in Rotterdam?

Danish Opening of Parliament

The Danish royal family gathered in Copenhagen yesterday to attend the opening of their nation’s parliament. Queen Margrethe led her relations in a repeated red bumper hat with navy floral bow at the side. While I agree with many of you who would prefer a less twee embellishment on this hat, the vibrant colour certainly made Margrethe stand out in the crowd.

While I initially posted that Crown Princess Mary was the only family member in a new millinery design for this event, her hat was actually a previously worn one… with a twist.  This design is a strong shape (Mary has similar designs with square crowns and curved brims) and she carries it well. This most royal shade of purpley-blue felt is beautiful on her and the feather plume trim, a new addition on this outing that completely transformed the piece) makes a wonderful statement.

Princess Marie topped her elegant ivory coat with a pink straw fascinator. Made of a central bloom surrounded by a circle of pointed leaves, the design is trimmed with several slim feathers (far less feathers than we saw it embellished with during its first outing!). The design reads very summery to me and I think I might have preferred a repeat of the wonderful purple fedora she wore to this event last year.

Princess Benedikte repeated her brown straw hat with gently upturned brim and back bow trim. It’s a simple design but one that works well on her thanks to its lovely, warm colour- a colour that I thought was particularly wonderful with Benedikte’s blue dress and aqua wrap.

This event is one of the few on the Danish royal calendar that sees the family all together and in hats. Which designs stood out to you in particular this year?

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima opened the exhibition “Mapping Australia” at the Aboriginal Art Museum in Utrecht today. For this event, Queen Máxima topped her bronze and navy striped dress with a chic midnight blue felt fedora hat with extended, slightly floppy brim.

Previously Worn: At first glance, I thought this hat was this fedora variation last worn in November 2014 but the crown shape on the two hats are different (today’s hat does not have the distinct pinches and indented crown of the previously worn hat or the feather trim and the brim shapes are different). I think this hat is new.
I really like the scale of this fedora on Máxima admire the styling on this ensemble- it’s so well balanced and sophisticated. What do you think of this new hat on her today?

Queen Margrethe in Wittenberg

Queen Margrethe joined German President Joachim Gauck in Wittenberg yesterday for the reopening ceremony of the All Saints’ Church. For this event, she repeated her mint green hat with cuff brim.

This remains a great design for Margrethe and the photo above shows, more clearly than we have seen before, the same silk crepe fabric on both the hat and suit. This makes for a very ‘matchy’ ensemble- something she seems to favour. This event also unveiled the altar cloth Queen Margrethe designed and hand embroidered as gift for this occasion- it’s certainly a work of art.
