Takamado Princesses Visit Hiroshima

Princess Hisako and Princess Ayako of Takamado were in Hiroshima last week to attend the National Junior Highschool Archery Championships. Last Wednesday they paid a visit to the Peace Memorial Park, both dressed in memorial white ensembles. Princess Ayako wore a simple white hat with short, upfolded brim while her mother, Princess Hisako, wore a larger scale design with flat brim and domed crown in the style of a Pork Pie hat. This is an unusual millinery shape for Hisako that I thought the sleek design was great on her.

Closer Look: Somerville Scottish Hat

When Queen Elizabeth opened the Scottish Parliament on July 1, 1999, it was an historic moment. As she does at such times, the Queen chose an ensemble of significance, this one in very fitting Scottish heather purple.

On display now at Holyrood House for this year’s exhibition on 90 years of the Queen’s fashion, the Royal Collection Trust shared these snap which give us a better view of the hat than we have seen previously.

Until seeing the closeup of the hat above, I did not realize how heavily patterned the purple wool silk is- it certainly gives a strong sense of texture to this design. This view also confirms the feathers as dark mottled green, a much more interesting design choice (and one that links much better to the Queen`s green dress) than the black ones I thought they were. In the end, I`m left admiring the shape of this design but wishing that part of it was made of straw to give a break in the busy texture of the ensemble. While Queen Elizabeth wore the tartan shawl pictured above as a traditional plaid (pinned to her brooch and trailing down her back), the way it is draped in the exhibition photo shows how beautifully it ties the ensemble together. It`s a shame it wasn`t as visible when it was worn.

Top Royal Hats in June 2016

After comparing the numerous beautiful new and repeated royal hats we saw worn in June (beyond those worn to Ascot or to Queen Elizabeth’s 90th birthday celebrations), two very clear winners have emerged:

Queen Elizabeth Takes Up Balmoral Residence

Queen Elizabeth officially arrived at Balmoral Castle yesterday to begin her summer vacation. As in years past, she inspected a guard of honour, this year formed by The Royal Highland Fusiliers, 2nd Battalion. For this arrival, she repeated an ecru straw hat with tall crown trimmed in a a pleated hatband, curling feathers and a multi looped bow with rough edges. These photos or the one below, taken during during its last outing in 2008, give a better view of the detail on this design

This hat is very similar to the very first hat Rachel Trevor Morgan designed for her 80th birthday in 2006 but make no mistake- the two are different. I honestly do not recall seeing yesterday’s hat before, perhaps because the neutral colour blends in my mind with all the other ecru/cream hats in the Queen’s wardrobe. Taking a close look at this one, however, is worthwhile becase the proportion and feather trim are both so lovely.
