Princess Benedikte Opens International Alzheimer’s Conference

Princess Benedikte  of Denmark officially opened the 2014 Alzheimer’s Association International Conference yesterday in Copenhagen. For this engagement, she repeated her pale pink picture hat with pleated brim and crown woven in straw stripes. I am not partial to the wave shape of the brim but this remains a light and very pretty summer royal hat.

Seeing Double: Crown Princess Mary

Crown Princess Mary of Denmark is the mother of royal twins, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine. You might be surprised to see she has another set of twins:

Flag Day, September 5, 2012 and the Opening of Parliament, October 1, 2013

It is the same hat with tall, square wool crown and woven straw brim. The slight curve in the brims are the same, as is the double feather trim (perhaps, slightly longer feathers on the black hat). The only difference between these two Susanne Juul designed has, as far as I can tell, is the colour. Interestingly, Mary also has a third version of this same hat shape made entirely of pale pink straw. While it’s not an exact twin of the first two, it’s a closely related little sister. I have always thought this particular hat shape is a fantastic one for Princess Mary and she wears it very well.

This phenomenon intrigues me to no end- are the hats purchased together? Do royals go back to their milliners and ask for another model of the same hat? What causes someone to make this choice when there are countless other hat styles and options available to them? It’s interesting to ponder, isn’t it?

Danish Royal Couple Arrive in Aarhus

On Tuesday, Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik relocated to their summer residence at Marselisborg Castle. For their arrival in nearby Aarhus aboard the royal yacht Dannebrog, Queen Margrethe repeated her much loved natural straw hat. With her tailored navy suit jacket, it formed a suitably nautical ensemble.

Queen Margrethe Presents the “Queen’s Clock”

On Friday last week, Queen Margrethe presented the “Queen’s Clock” award at a parade at The Royal Guards barracks in Copenhagen. For this event, Margrethe repeated her royal blue straw hat with white under brim and looped bow trim. The photos today show how beautifully this hat coordinates with her silk dress (one of my favourite pieces in her wardrobe these days). My only wish is a changed hairstyle for Queen Margrethe. Can you imagine her in a coiffe similar to her sister Princess Benedikte, or her cousin Princess Christina of Sweden? She would still rock a major tiara but would not look like she is bald every time she wears a hat. I don’t think a royal haircut is likely to happen but one can hope, right?

Danish Summer Cruise Day 3

Last Friday, Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik of Denmark enjoyed the third and final day of the first leg of their annual summer cruise with a stop in Marstal. Margrethe repeated her natural straw hat, this time trimmed with a red and black plaid band around the crown in the same fabric as her skirt. The hat is quite fine but that band… I think it needs to be sliced in two. It would be so much prettier if it was half as wide as it is now, don’t you think?

Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrick will board the Royal Yacht Dannebrog again September for a second, five-day cruise. We will certainly cover the hats during this leg of the summer cruise at that time.
