Belgian Noble Wedding: Grand Ducal Guests

Royal HatsWhen a noble bride’s extended family contains members of the Brazilian, Belgian and Luxembourgish aristocracy, one can expect many royal guests at the wedding! Such was the case for last weekend’s marriage of Princess Alix de Ligne and Count Guillaume de Dampierre last weekend. As the bride’s father, Prince Michel de Ligne, is a first cousin of Grand Duke Henri, most of the Grand Ducal family of Luxembourg were in Belgium for the wedding. My sincere thanks to Valentin Dupont, author of Royalement Blog, for generously sharing his photos of the event.

Grand Duchess Maria Teresa repeated her black straw slice hat with ribbon twist trim, a hat that remains a great one for her. With her tan leaf trimmed suit, the hat made for a polished ensemble.

Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie went a more vibrant route, pairing her electric blue knit dress with a sunny yellow straw picture hat. While the hat looks to feature a double brim, it is actually a simple sedge shape with pyramid top (the brim of the base hat is just above ‘s eyebrows) with a curving, wide silk edged wrap of sorts that circles around the base hat’s brim (view this video at 1:33 for a full picture) and curling blue feather trim. While I want to commend Stéphanie’s bold use of colour, I’m not sure that the hat flatters her. There’s also something about the placement of those feathers I don’t like, perhaps because they are competing with the soaring wrap on the brim.

Princess Claire paired her peachy pink wrap dress with a coordinating straw hat trimmed in a slim cerise hatband and silk rose at the side. While the Hereditary Grand Duchess opted for too much colour, Claire’s ensemble read a little bland.

Princess Tessy got the colour mix in her ensemble just right, pairing her white dress and floral coat with a turquoise statement headpiece. I imagine the unique shape of this piece is meant to frame the wearer’s face… in this case, it looks more like it’s swallowing her up. With its mass of curling straw ribbon, it is fun design that I think would work better for Tessy if it was about half the size.

Princess Alexandra repeated her embellished lace headband, replacing the band’s original lime green flower with a larger one in black silk. I’m all for renovating pieces to give them new life but the mix of Alexandra’s delicate lace dress, heavy black jacket and the flapper style headpiece felt convoluted and I’m afraid, didn’t work for me.

We seldom see the Grand Ducal family at the same event (except for National Day, which is coming up on Friday this week) and my quibbles about their hats aside, it’s wonderful to see the whole family together. What do you think of the hats they wore for this wedding?

Luxembourg Royals Celebrate Octave

On Sunday, members of the Luxembourg royal family attended annual celebrations around the closing of the Octave of Our Lady of Luxembourg. While not as well attended as in past years, Grand Duchess Maria Teresa and Heredity Grand Duchess Stéphanie both attended the event. The Grand Duchess wore a streamlined pillbox hat covered in black silk. While the hat is very simple, it worked beautifully with her colour blocked dress and coat and Maria Teresa looked great.

Princess Stéphanie topped her taupe and silver brocade coat in a taupe straw percher hat. The beret-based piece is trimmed with a large double bow and there appears to be metallic threads woven in the straw, giving it a subtle bit of shimmer. It’s a sweet hat that I think would have been much improved if Stéphanie had worn it a little higher up on her head. As placed here, it looks milliseconds away from falling off.

Some of you might be interested to note that the brilliant girls over at Luxarazzi recognized this hat as the same one worn by Princess Tessy to this event back in 2012 (with the slight rearrangement of the bow tail on the left!). I think Tessy’s placement of this piece was much more successful.

As you all continue chatting about royal hats in the news this week, here is a look back at Queen Sonja, Queen Sofia, the late Grand Duchess Josephine-Charlotte and Queen Beatrix celebrating Queen Margrethe’s 60th birthday back in 2000. It seems that chic grey hats never go out of style!

The Danish royal family is scheduled to make their annual appearance on the balcony of Christian IX’s Palace for Queen Margrethe’s birthday on Wednesday- keep watch for her to début a new hat!

Best New Royal Hat of 2015: Luxembourg and Norway

2015 best hat small

After looking at the royal hats worn by Belgian and Danish royals in our quest to find the Best New Royal Hat of 2015, we turn our attention today to entries from Luxembourg and Norway. While even the monarchs in these two nations are not frequent hat wearers, there were a number of new pieces that the Grand Duchess, Queen and other princesses débuted this year. I have continued my editorial hand here, omitting a number of hats (the Grand Duchess’ two pillboxes here and here; Princess Claire’s spiky cocktail hat and Princess Alexandra’s headband; Princess Mette-Marit’s fascinator and these funeral hats) from the pollfor streamlining purposes. Click on any of the photos to jump back to original posts to see additional description and detail of the hats.

A reminder that the hats with the most votes across this semifinal will move forward to the final face off. If you don’t think any of these hats are worthy of the title of Best of 2015, save your vote (or take another look at the Belgian or Danish polls).  The next poll will be up tomorrow.

Greek Royal Wedding 20 Years On: Royal Guests

The wedding of a crown prince of any nation is usually cause for a major royal celebration. While Crown Prince Pavlos of Greece, Prince of Denmark did not marry in either of the nations where he holds princely title, his wedding to Marie-Chantal Miller on July 1, 1995 was a grand event nonetheless.

Along with the queens on the groom’s side of the family (Queen Anne-Marie, Queen Margrethe and Queen Sofia), Queen Elizabeth, Queen Silvia of Sweden, Queen Noor of Jordan and Grand Duchess Josephine of Luxembourg all attended this event. Queen Elizabeth wore a very pretty lavender hat with pleated straw crown while Queen Silvia wore a pink picture hat with white pleated crin brim. Grand Duchess Josephine topped her graphic black and white striped suit with a white straw hat with gently curved brim.

Queen Noor wore a white straw hat in the shape of an oversize cloche. The bell brim was further enlarged by a huge bow at the back of the hat. Of all the hats worn at this wedding, I think think this one is most ‘stuck’ in the millinery fashion of the time.Queen Noor, July 1, 1995 | Royal HatsPrincess Maria Teresa, Hereditary Grand Duchess of Luxembourg (as she was known then) wore a beige silk headband with bow at the side while Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, who was still a teenager, wore a large white hat with squared crown and wide upturned stripe of black straw around the brim.

Princess Alexandra of Kent wore a  pale green hat with tall crown trimmed with a mass of green feathers around the base of the crown. It is a style of hat we see on Alexandra still today and one that is just so quintessentially her. tThe Duchess of Marlborough topped her sky blue suit and lacy blouse with a white hat wrapped in pleated swaths of organdie. I believe Princess Michael of Kent was also in attendance although I have been unable to locate a photo of her hat.

Empress Farah of Iran and her daughter-in-law Princess Yasmin, both wore hats trimmed with large bows. While Farah’s hat had a square crown and larger crown than Yasmine’s hat, which had a smaller cartwheel shaped brim, I think both hats are perfect examples of 1990s millinery fashion.

Princess Marina of Savoy (now Princess of Naples) memorably wore a large navy picture hat trimmed with a wide swath of coordinating feathers. The hat on its own is a bold look but paired with her feather hemmed dress, is almost beyond description. In comparison, the Duchess of Bragança, who had married the Duke earlier in 1995, was more conservatively dressed in a pistachio green suit and matching floral trimmed hat.

Queen Margarita of Bulgaria wore an interesting domed hat in natural straw trimmed by a slim burgundy ruffle near the top of the crown. Her daughter-in-law Carla, the Princess of Panagyurishte, wore a simple cream straw hat.
Queen Marie, July 1, 1995 | Royal Hats 1995-01-07 Pavlos & MC wedding 54
The Princess of Vidin topped a pale blue and brown flowered suit with a chocolate straw hat. The brim on the front of the hat was curled back to the crown, leaving a halo around her face. Rosario, The Princess of Preslav, wore a large straw picture hat. With a beige square crown and white curved brim, edged in a wide beige stripe, the hat coordinated well with Rosario’s beige and white Valentino dress. Princess Kalina, who attended with Prince Laurent of Belgium, wore a characteristically unusual outfit, pairing a floppy natural straw picture hat with an embroidered, slinky bias cut dress.
That concludes our look back at the Greek Royal Wedding! I am most curious to hear your thoughts on the hats worn by these royal guests. And, I’m sure you join me in wishing Crown Prince Pavlos and Princess Marie-Chantal a very happy 20th anniversary.
