Hat From the Past

Royal Hats to this day in 1960 when a young King Bhumibol and Queen Sirikit of Thailand embarked on a four day state visit of Italy. Pictured here in Rome, Queen Sirikit wore in a textured white turban-pillbox hybrid (of a material I can’t begin to guess at) with some sort of bejeweled trim on the front.

Hats From the Past

Royal Hats While much has been said about Queen Maxima’s ensemble at Prinsjesdag earlier this week, a look back through history at this event shows it is not the only time a strong (and, um, unsuccessful) millinery statement has been made. Hats From the Past

Royal Hats to 54 years ago yesterday to another Prinsjesdag balcony scene in The Hague. Queen Julianna sported a voluminous hat very much of the time while Princess Margriet (right) wore a multi-piece floral headpiece. Princess Beatrix’s flat crowned hat looks like it was wrapped in tulle with feathers on the brim.

Hat From the Past

Royal Hats Looking back to August 1980 and the 80th birthday celebrations of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. Still in her turban era, the birthday hat she donned that day was a voluminous concoction of silk organza dotted ruffles and white feathers. For one’s 80th birthday, why not?!
