Swedish Opening Of Parliament 2020

King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia attended the opening of fall session of Riksdag (Swedish Parliament) in Stockholm yesterday.  This year’s event was scaled back because of the coronavirus and additional family members did not attend.

Queen Silvia continued the black and white dress code traditional to this event, topping her bouclé with a repeated white straw calot hat. The hat is trimmed with a multi-looped white bow on the side studded with silver sparkles and wrapped in burnt white feathers. While the textured suit may lend itself more naturally to a more wintry hat, this one stands on its own for a warm late summer day, the silver trim picking up faint sparkle in the weave of the bouclé.

Danish Crown Prince Couple Commemorate Flag Day

Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary took part in Flag Day ceremonies in Copenhagen on Saturday, remembering members of Danish forces who have lost their lives in service to their country.

For this commemoration, Crown Prince Frederik was predictably attired in military uniform with cap. Crown Princess Mary repeated her black felt calot trimmed with black felt and feather leaves on the side and a black net birdcage veil.

The trim on this hat has been added over it’s past two outings; while it’s subtle, as far as trims go, the hat benefits from it, softening it’s previously stark lines and framing Princess Mary’s face in a lovely way. Paired with her gorgeous blue coat, the black hat lends that slight bit of gravitas to the ensemble that so fits a memorial event such as this one.

Monday Multiples: Queen Máxima

One of the most vibrant hats in Queen Máxima’s wardrobe is a large coral straw disk edged in beige straw binding, trimmed with multicoloured feathers inspired by the Carmine Bee-Eater bird. Made by South African designer Bettina Thomas, the Dutch Queen has paired this memorable hat with two ensembles:

Look #1: With a coral tonal printed Natan coat dress worn May 20, 2015 to open a sculpture exhibition in The Hague

Look #2: With a beige silk ruched waist dress, also by Natan, worn October 15, 2019 in India

Hats From the Past: Queen Beatrix’s Inauguration

Royal Hats Carrying on our unexpected tangent to past Dutch inaugurations this week, today we’re looking at the April 30, 1980 abdication of Queen Juliana and inauguration of Queen Beatrix. For the post-abdication balcony appearance, no hats were worn.

The inauguration, however, was a different story. Queen Beatrix wore the Pearl Button tiara with scrolled base and five pearl buttons surrounded in diamonds. Her gown was made by Dutch designer Theresia Vreugdenhil.

Queen Juliana wore a beautifully draped turban hat by Ernst-Jan Beeuwkes made of the same blue wool crepe as her gown, which was made by Joke Ransdorp.

Princess Margriet wore a dove grey hat with wide, folded back halo brim that provided an excellent backdrop for her diamond and sapphire earrings (not to mention that spectacular sapphire stomacher!).

Princess Irene topped her black and white graphic floral dress with a white silk floral headpiece that circled around the back of her head. Princess Christina was in head to toe turquoise in matching gown and unembellished bumper brimmed hat.

If you jump over to the photo below and enlarge it, you’ll see some familiar royal faces- Queen Sonja in a royal blue cloche, Princess Yuriko of Mikasa behind Princess Margriet in a slate blue pillbox.

I wasn’t expecting to look at these hats this week but it’s been a fun rabbit hole to dive down! What do you think of the hats at Queen Beatrix’s inauguration?
