Hat From the Past

Royal Hats to this day in 1941 when the Duke and Duchess of Windsor arrived in Washington, the Duchess in an elegantly prim pillbox hat.

The Danish opening of Parliament this morning will undoubtedly see a number of hats worn by Queen Margrethe, Princess Mary, Princess Marie and Princess Benedikte – please use the comments to share links to these along with any others worn today.

‘New’ Hat From the Past #33

Royal Hatsto October 16, 1986 and an official state visit to China when Queen Elizabeth wore this aqua straw veiled pillbox with large back bow to view the infamous Terracotta Army. It’s a whimsical hat that takes an almost cartoonish turn paired with Her Majesty’s gingham trimmed suit- a memorable ensemble I’m surprised not to remember seeing before. Do any of you recall this hat?

‘New’ Hat From the Past #32

Royal Hats to a red straw hat with braided texture brim and a velvet ribbon hatband worn in Geneva in April 1980 (with cherry trim) and in the South Pacific in October 1982 (sans cherries). Queen Elizabeth had similar hats in this shape, as I recall, but the textured straw and vibrant colour on this design makes it stand out- do any of you remember seeing it before?

Between the Danish opening of parliament next Tuesday and the Dutch state visit to Portugal the week after, there will certainly be hats for you to share and discuss. See you in three weeks!

Countess Of Wessex At Military Parade

The Countess Of Wessex was in Dorking today to bid a celebratory farewell to the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre Headley Court. For a thanksgiving service at St Martin’s Church followed by a parade of servicemen and women through the town, she repeated her swirled saucer percher hat in pale blue-grey straw.

Today’s events gave us a better view of the piece than we saw on its first outing- we can now see that the blue crin flowers are placed on both sides of the elevated top of the saucer, giving beautifully light movement to the design. It’s an exquisite piece that again, paired with Sophie’s streamlined blue silk coat, makes for a very sophisticated ensemble.
