to October 1981 and a young Princess of Wales on an inaugural visit to the country of which she was princess. Many of Diana’s early hats were small pieces with veils and lavish feather trim like this one- I’m not sure this beige velvet John Boyd designed calot was the most becoming colour for the blonde princess but it looks from these photos that the crowds didn’t care.

thirty-five years to October 7, 1982 when Queen Elizabeth wore this flowered bowler hat on a trip to Australia. It’s a cheeky design with a slight circus costume vibe that I’m surprised not to have seen before. Australian readers- do you recall seeing this hat?

It has been nearly a year since we last saw Queen Máxima wear her harvest gold velvet ruched turban designed by Fabienne Delvigne (a hat affectionately known here as “The Brain” or “The Pincushion”). The sartorially brave Dutch queen has worn this piece with three different ensembles, prompting me to wonder, dearest readers, which pairing do you think is best?

I prefer the colour contrast in Look #4, where the pairing of hat and outfit makes the hat take on a browner hue than the mustardy pallor it has in the other outings.I know this hat is controversial and has, in the past, stirred up strong opinions but I trust you will all keep your comments respectful. to October 10, 1997 and a colourful picture hat with upswept brim worn on a visit to Pakistan. The contrast between the hat’s navy and cream base is intensified with the diagonal turquoise hatband- a style detail I don’t recall seeing before (or on another of the Queen’s hats!). It’s a lovely design I’d love to see Her Majesty repeat again!
