Princess Marie of Denmark visited the Danish Emergency Management Agency’s chemical lab. She and Princesss Benedikte  joined other members of the family yesterday for the funeral of one of Prince Henrik’s close friends.

Autumn/Winter 2017 collections are showing up online and while I’m still enjoying sunny, summery days (and food!) in my part of the world, these wintry designs were too beautiful not to catch my eye:

Sharp wool boater with black leather flower trim from Mind Your Bonce Millinery
Teal button cocktail hat with tall ruffle made by Sally Ashlin at Georgiana Millinery
Wool fedoras in the most luxuriously wonderful jewel tones from British milliner Philip Ian Wright
Wonderful beaded crown on this oversized fedora by Jane Taylor
Beautiful sculpted cloche hats- white from Bay Willow Designs and pink from Tracy Chaplin Millinery
Vibrantly hued silk and velvet turbans from Nerida Fraiman
Lovely leaf trimmed powder pink beret base cocktail hat from Rosie Olivia
Unexpected and interesting mix of grey felt and white windowpane crin from Cara Meehan London

And just when we thought Philip Treacy had done everything that could possibly be done to a hat, a peak at his upcoming Autumn/Winter 2017 collection looks like it will feature zippers. Unexpected, and amazing!

Queen Mathilde Visits Italian Art Exhibit

Queen Mathilde of Belgium was in Venice today to take in Biennale Arte 2017, the city’s 57th annual art exhibition.

For this visit, she topped her pale beigey-pink Natan dress with her stacked petal calot headpiece made of banana fibres. The combination of hat and dress makes for another understatedly elegant ensemble for Mathilde and the creative shape of the piece works well for this engagement…. but it’s all rather ‘blush biscuit’. Pretty, certainly, but bland.

I’m afraid I’m rather bored of this hat. What do you think of it in combination with this frock?

Duchess of Rothesay Names Aircraft Carrier

Duchess of Rothesay (as Camilla is known when in Scotland) was at Rosyth Dockyard this morning to officially name the aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales which will begin service in 2019.

For this event, she repeated her cream straw hat with upswept brim, wide navy folded straw hatband and knotted silk side detail. We’ve talked in the past about the loss of feather trim that used to adorn this piece– a loss, perhaps, not felt as much thanks to the hat’s pairing today with a striking new navy lace trimmed coat. Nautical navy and white always makes for a classic look and the scale of this hat, even without the sweeping feathers, remains wonderful on Camilla.

Any new thoughts about this hat?

Hat From the Past

Royal Hats to a pair of hats, worn 96 years ago. Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg might not be familiar faces but their youngest son certainly is. Princess Alice’s wide brimmed hat with tall crown and wide hatband certainly is a beauty.

Reader Question: Queen Elizabeth’s Oldest Working Hat

During the recent series on ‘new’ unfamiliar hats worn by Queen Elizabeth during the 1980s and 1990s, I received this interesting reader question via twitter:

Janet, what a great question. The first hat that came to mind was this pale blue Philip Somerville design with square crown, lattice printed brim, and front bow. She wore it twice this summer- first for a garden party and most recently, for Trooping the Colour on June 17 (below left) and I believe its first appearance was during a visit to Malta on November 26, 2005 (below right).

Can any of you think of a hat more than 12 years old Her Majesty has worn over the past 3 years?
