Hat From the Past

A quick note- I’ll be away from the blog for a week until next Wednesday. There will be a new “Hat From The Past” post daily and I encourage you all to share any hats worn this week in the comments of these flashback posts. See you all in a week!

100th Anniversary of the Order of the British Empire

Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh attended a service this morning to mark the one hundredth anniversary of the Order of the British Empire at St Paul’s Cathedral.  The Queen repeated a wonderful green hat with tall crown, trimmed with navy centered green silk flowers and feathers.  While this particular hat shape is not my favourite, I adore the overall ensemble. Great colour, great balance and great contrast, thanks greatly in part to a more visible dress than usual.

British Royals Host Second Palace Garden Party

Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh hosted the second garden party of the season yesterday in the grounds of  Buckingham Palace, their London home. The Queen repeated her pale yellow hat with upswept brim, straw bow loops and silk flowers in brown and blue. The floral trim on this piece has always felt a little random but today’s photos finally brought one with a peek at the accompanying dress- the trim now makes more sense.

The Duchess of Cornwall repeated her ice blue picture hat with inverted brim edging, straw and crin crown wraps and a mass of flying straw and crin curled bow loops on the side. The shape and scale of this piece is perfect for a garden party… I’m just hoping to see something new (and in a saturated colour!) on Camilla, soon.

Speaking of new and saturated colours, Princess Eugenie topped her electric blue dress with an orange straw pyramid shaped saucer hat. It’s an unexpected choice for her but styled in the colour blocking way that it is here, the hat tops a great look for Eugenie. Such fun!

Summer garden parties, even when attended by a few royals as this one was, always bring interesting hats. What do you think of the trio we saw yesterday?

Swedish Royals Visit Indonesia

King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia embarked on a two day state visit to Indonesia on Monday. For the first day of the tour, Queen Silvia wore a pale pink padded headpiece with open crown. This piece looks like a pillbox hat from front view and I wish it was- I think a pillbox would have been a better match for Silvia’s long skirted suit.

Previously Worn: May 27, 2016 Queen Silvia also wore a similar twin in bright yellow back in March, 2010.

Yesterday, the Swedish queen topped her classic white and black coat with a matching white hat- perhaps one of her go-to calot designs? I’m afraid without a better view, we can’t be certain (links to a better view of this hat shared in the comments would be greatly appreciated!)

Hat From the Past

Royal Hats another hat with upswept brim worn to the races, 78 years ago today. Princess Marina’s placement of this chic design, forward over one eye, fits eerily well with current fashion. I suppose style inevitably travels full circle.
