Several weeks ago, we enjoyed two videos put together by Spanish milliner Cristina de Prada about the incredible exhibit, “Balenciaga. The Elegance of the Hat.” Today, we continue with two more!
Cristina recently attended the opening of this exhibition at the Cristobal Balenciaga museum in a vintage straw hat she created a custom cork hat block to form- if you have not already seen it, do scroll through her photos here. It’s fantastic.

King Felipe and Queen Letizia arrived in Stockholm today to kick off a two-day state visit to Sweden.
For their arrival, Queen Letizia wore an orange draped silk abacca bandeau headpiece trimmed with feather flowers, dyed a slightly darker shade and place on one side of the design.
The colour is fantastic on the Spanish queen as is the scale. The flower placement is also interesting, framing the face instead of on top of the design, leaving the drape of the silk abaca visible. I have some quibbles about the silk abaca drape (lovelier in the video below than in photographs today) and the seasonal clash between summery headpiece and wintry cape but as Letizia does not always wear hats or headpieces for state visits, it was fantastic to see her in something today.

Queen Silvia repeated a bumper hat in vibrant magenta felt, worn on the back of her head in the style of a calot. The hat is trimmed with a felt cutout leaf on one side that anchors a small bunch of wispy feathers that lay across the front of the design and cascade off the other side. The saturated colour is so great on Silvia and the hat combines with the matching coat to create a polished but punchy ensemble (especially standing next to Queen Letizia in that luscious orange!).

In the afternoon, the monarchs visited the Nobel Museum to see a special exhibition on Santiago Ramon y Cajal. For this, King Carl Gustaf donned a sharp dark navy Borsalino fedora.

Members of Monaco’s royal family celebrated their country’s national holiday today at a military parade and balcony appearance in the palace courtyard and thanksgiving mass at the Cathedral of Monaco.

The most senior female member of the family in attendance this year was Princess Gabriella, who wore a darling ivory soft boiled wool beret trimmed with a tulle veil and small pink blossoms.

Princess Caroline wore a headpiece of two sizes of black net tulle attached to a headband, the large dotted and placed further back from her face. There’s not much to say about this design.

Beatrice Borromeo Casiraghi wore the only brimmed hat of the day, a tall crowned design with wide dropped brim in ecru braided straw trimmed with a wide black hatband and bow. The graphic contrast and spectacular scale of the design makes it stand out… and while I can’t ignore the construction issues giving the hatband some wobbles (it doesn’t look like it was cut on the bias), the overall look is an elegantly classic one for Beatrice.

Camille Gottlieb wore a black felt blocked beret trimmed with a large flat bow. It is the first hat Camille has worn for National celebrations and it’s a good one.
