Hat Swap Between Luxembourg Royals

Royal Hats In the course of following royal hats, there are occasions when a certain hat elicits the unmistakeable feeling that one has seen it before. A few of you have experienced this in recent weeks with hats worn by the Grand Duchess and Hereditary Grand Duchess of Luxembourg.

When Prince Guillaume and Princess Stéphanie of Luxembourg unveiled a memorial at Auschwitz in late January, many  thought her brown felt brimless hat was her best piece of millinery to date. To some, however, this hat looked familiar. Svenja, one of the writers of the Luxarazzi blog, was the first to recognize it as the same hat Grand Duchess Maria Teresa wore to the December 1999 wedding of King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium. The left side of the hat (on the right side of the photo below) has been slightly crushed since its original outing but there’s no question- this is indeed the same hat.

When Princess Stéphanie attended Queen Fabiola’s funeral in December, her classic black pillbox raised similar questions as to where we had seen this hat before. This pillbox was also from Grand Duchess Maria Teresa’s millinery closet, last seen during the Dutch royal visit to Luxembourg in March 2012 (see below).

The Luxembourg royals are a hat and fashion sharing bunch (see a a number of their other hat swaps at this Luxarazzi post). I’m all for hat sharing although I would love to see the Hereditary Grand Duchess develop a millinery style and approach that is uniquely her own.

Funeral of Queen Fabiola

The Belgian Royal Family was joined by cousins from the houses of Luxembourg and Liechtenstin for Queen Fabiola’s funeral today in Brussels. Grand Duchess Maria Teresa wore a small black velvet pillbox which was trimmed with a simple band of black silk around the perimeter of the hat.

Ninety-three year old Grand Duke Jean also made the trip from Luxembourg to bid farewell to his late sister-in-law.

Princess Stéphanie, the Hereditary Grand Duchess, wore a larger scale, rounded black pillbox hat.

Princess Sibilla of Luxembourg, Princess Margaretha of Liechtenstein and Archduchess Marie Astrid also wore classic, unembellished black pillbox hats.

While these simple black pillbox hats were so very appropriate for the funeral today, I think there is also something very beautiful about each of them.

200th Anniversary of the Netherlands

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima hosted celebrations for the 200th anniversary of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Maastricht today, welcoming Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg, King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of the Belgians, and German President Joachim Gauck and his partner Daniela Schadt.

Queen Máxima repeated a hat we have seen on her numerous times (and recently discussed at his post), a tan straw picture hat with dramatically upturned ‘slice’ brim. I love the pairing of this hat with her aqua printed dress and thought the styling of this ensemble was perfect on Máxima.

Grand Duchess Maria Teresa topped her lovely green suit with a cocktail hat in leaf green straw. This hat, which featured a beret-style base, was wrapped in swirls of wired organdy ribbon. The effect was light and fresh and this hat looked wonderful on the Grand Duchess. I can not recall the last time we saw her in green and this colour was beautiful on her.

Queen Mathilde repeated the orb of dusty rose shredded straw she debuted last month. Its pairing with Mathilde’s dusty rose peplum dress was much more successful and I found myself less opposed to this headpiece than I was when we first saw it. It is still not my favourite piece of millinery but with her outfit today, it worked.

Daniela Schadt wore a simple natural straw hat with rolled brim which coordinated well with her blue and tan ensemble. It was not as spectacular as the royal hats but somehow, it was just right for her.

My favourite royal hat at this event was worn by Grand Duchess Maria Teresa although I thought the other two queens looked fantastic. Which hat today was your favourite?
