Trooping The Colour: Gloucester & Kent Families

We conclude our look at the hats seen Saturday for Trooping the Colour with those worn by members of the Gloucester and Kent families. It’s always wonderful to see the Duchess of Kent at this event and rather disappointing there is not a better view of her hat to share. It looks to be a lavender pillbox, likely in straw, trimmed with a large spray of face-framing feathers on the side.

UPDATE- thanks to avid royal watcher and photographer Paul Ratcliffe for sharing this photo of the Duchess, just for us! This view confirms her hat is a high lavender textured straw bandeau, with feather trim framing the right side of her face. The colour is lovely on Katharine and the bandeau style suits her bobbed haircut really well. It’s a fresh and modern headpiece that proves cutting edge style is possible at any age!

Lady Helen Taylor repeated the white homberg crowned ht with upswept brim and navy bow trim we saw her wear to this event last year, with an added red and fuchsia hued silk flower on the front of the hat. The addition of this flower transforms the hat (hiding the distinctive crown shape makes it appear to be a different style) and firmly ties the colour palate to Helen’s fuchsia printed dress. Seeing this transformation makes me wonder why we don’t see such minor millinery renovations on more royal hats! Helen’s sister-in-law, Lady Nicholas Windsor, wore a dusky pink straw button based percher hat trimmed with large silk roses and dotted net tulle veil.

While Princess Alexandra and the Duchess of Gloucester were in attendance, they did not appear in any photographs.

UPDATE- Again, avid royal watcher and photographer Paul Ratcliffe comes to our rescue! My deepest thanks to Paul for posting these photos just for our benefit! Princess Alexandra repeated her dove grey straw with tall, flat crown and cartwheel brim trimmed with a large straw knotted bow and a swath of dotted net tulle overlaying the hat’s brim. The Duchess of Gloucester repeated her black pillbox with new addition of a black tulle veil.

Lady Rose Gilham was also in attendance on the Buckingham Palace balcony this year in a slate blue-grey vertical saucer hat trimmed with a bow and feathers.

Julia Ogilvy, who recently graduated from the Harvard Divinity School, paired her dotted grey dress with a tall grey straw stovepipe hat with cartwheel brim trimmed with an exquisite spray of straw roses and leaves. Flora Ogilvy repeated the wide brimmed cream straw picture hat with square crown and large, layered side bow that she seems to have permanently appropriated from her mother’s millinery closet! And no wonder, as it’s a wonderful, classic and clearly versatile hat.

Zenouska Mowatt topped her vibrant pink, lilac, orange and white patterned dress with a textured white straw beret percher hat trimmed with curling white feathers and a pink and orange straw knotted flying bow. There’s a lot of texture going on in this piece and while I really like its idiosyncratic creativity, I’m not convinced it complements or relates enough with the dress to work well together.

Princess Michael of Kent used the occasion to début a new hat. In almond straw, the design features a flat crown and wide, cartwheel brim and is simply trimmed with a wide straw hatband. Marie-Christine favours dramatic millinery statements and this one feels surprisingly sedate and traditional for her. It’s another versatile piece I think we’ll see again many times in years to come.

Lady Frederick Windsor topped her beautifully cut suit with an ecru straw vertical saucer hat trimmed with a cream feather lotus flower and slim, curling straw tails. The steep diagonal lines of the hat work so well with the similar line on the hem of Sophie’s jacket. This is not a hat I’d be drawn to on its own but with this suit, forms a really lovely ensemble.

Lady Gabriella Windsor wore a cream straw hat with angular crown and gently sideswept brim, trimmed with straw twists and a handful of white silk sweet peas. It’s a style, scale and colour of hat we’ve seen often on Gabriella but one that she carries so well. The open neck of her blue coat dress is a particularly effective compliment to the lines of the hat and the two pieces join to create a beautifully balanced look.

This Week’s Extras

Royal Hats

While we already saw the Duchess of Cornwall’s furry hat at the Hennesy Gold Cup last month, we missed those worn by Princess Anne, Lady Frederick Windsor and Lady Gabriella Windsor (Tatler). Thank to reader Laura for the links!

Julia Ogilvy keeping warm in windy Nantucket in a knit wool hat (Flora Ogilvy Instagram)

How impressive is this floral embellished beret by John Boyd and this winter white percher pillbox by Montgomery Millinery? I’d love to see both designs on royal heads.

Milliner Stephen Jones shared this throwback photo of his first design purchased by the Victoria and Albert Museum back in 1982. It’s a very interesting design that feels quite ahead of its time.

Royal houses have been filling social media with images of the Christmas Trees. The young Danish Princes and Princesses decorated their tree this week and how charming are these crown ornaments on the Buckingham Palace Christmas trees? My favourite royal tree so far is the one at Clarence House.

Such a sweet new photo released of Prince Amadeo, Archduchess Elisabetta and wee Archduchess Anna Astrid.

Some serious sparkle at Buckingham Place for the annual Diplomatic Reception… although I wouldn’t be sad at all to see the Princes dump the knee britches part of their formal dress.

And the royal cuteness award of the week goes to little Princess Amelia of Luxembourg, cuddling her new baby brother Prince Liam. Adorable.

Trooping The Colour: Extended British Royal Family

Royal Hats

It has been a busy weekend of royal hats! Before peeking at the Queen’s pink choice for the Patron’s lunch today, I want to step back and finish our look at the designs worn for Trooping the Colour yesterday by the Gloucester and Kent families. The Duchess of Gloucester repeated a navy hat with squared crown and wide brim. This picture, taken during a previous outing, gives a much better look at the hat’s shape and interesting leaf trim. The Countess of Ulster topped her turquoise dress with a matching vertical saucer hat, trimmed with what looks to be coral feathers. I would really like a closer view of this piece because it looks like it could be a show stopper! Lady Rose Gilman borrowed a second hat from her mother’s closet in as many days, a grey straw beret that topped her pink floral dress.

The Kent family was well represented for the second day in a row. The Duke of Kent was joined by his daughter, Lady Helen Taylor, in a folded white headpiece anchored with a navy ribbon. Lady Nicholas Windsor wore a cream disk saucer hat trimmed in feathers. Princess Alexandra of Kent repeated her grey hat with rounded crown, embellished with net tulle and floating feathers around the hat’s pleated hat band.

UPDATE- The Countess of St. Andrews and Lady Marina Windsor were in attendance as well. Sylvanna wore an white braided straw hat with turned down brim, trimmed with a tan jinsin fan around the top of the crown and knotted bow below the brim. The design, Tuxia, is from this year’s summer collection from French millinery brand Celine Robert.  Marina looked to be wearing a black or navy disc saucer hat.

Princess Alexandra’s daughter-in-law Julia Ogilvy (below, center) wore a tall crowned, cream picture hat with spiral quill trim while her daughter, Flora, wore a larger design in the same colour. Flora’s hat is lavishly trimmed with folded silk bows at the side. Her cousin, Zenouska Mowatt, topped her navy dress with the ‘Moselle’ headpiece from Jane Taylor, described by the designer as an “elegant transparent linear crin disc on straw base with angular feather detail.” It’s a lovely piece that Zenouska wears well.

Princess Michael of Kent to wore a new cocktail hat by John Boyd with white, bumper-style base trimmed with tall black feathers shaped as a gliding swan. The black swan feathers are anchored by a jewelled button and the hat is finished with swath of black net veil. Her daughter-in-law, Lady Frederick, wore a new pale blue percher beret trimmed with curled organdie ribbons and ecru feathers.

One of my favourite hats of the day draws our coverage of Trooping the Colour to a close and was worn Lady Gabriella Windsor. Her picture hat in oyster straw featured an angular crown and wide, gently upswept brim trimmed with wide curls of straw ribbon. On its own, the hat is outstanding but it is elevated to magnificence with Gabriella’s sleek Catherine Walker suit. We saw some fantastic royal fashion today and for me, this ensemble ranks near the very top.

90th Birthday Service of Thanksgiving: Kent Family Part 2

Royal Hats

I’m going to conclude our look at the wonderful hats worn today for the Queen’s 90th birthday service of thanksgiving with those worn by remaining members of the Kent family. Don’t worry, however- some of the best hats have been saved until last!

Princess Alexandra repeated her natural straw hat with white stripe around the brim and natural straw bows edged in the same primary colours as her coat. this hat’s crown is not as tall as many of Alexandra’s other has- a change that works really well here” and the embellishment is just fun. It’s an ensemble that just feels happy

Alexandra’s daughter-in-law, Julia Ogilvy, repeated her cream straw picture hat with tall crown and large, carthweel brim. The scale of this hat, along with its huge looped straw bow, makes it a dramatic piece while the colour keeps it elegant. I love this mix of drama and elegance and just wish there were some better photos to admire it more.

If it’s dramatic millinery we’re looking for, we can always count on Princess Michael of Kent to bring it (and bring it she did). She repeated her white straw picture hat with ostrich feather boa wrapped around the hat and trailing down the back. One of our guest milliners for Ascot last year described this hat as “just on the right side of overdone” and I think that sums it up very well.

Princess Michael’s daughter-in-law, Lady Frederick Windsor, topped her tangerine coat with a percher cocktail hat in pale peach. The design, with a straw beret-style base, is decorated with silk flowers, curling feather spines and bursts of orange net tulle. The colour goes well with Sophie’s colouring and the balance of embellishment on the piece works well.

One of my favourite hats of the day is the final one we will look at, worn today by Lady Gabriella Windsor. The large saucer-shaped picture hat in cream straw featured an oval brim that extended wide around the back of Gabriella’s head. While the shape makes quite a statement on its own, the hat is extravagantly decorated with a large mass of silk roses and curling ribbons of straw and crin. A large swath of open-weaved tulle veil completes the piece, which was shown off so very effectively by Gabriella’s cerise coat dress. It’s a show-stopper design to be sure.

This completes our look at the twenty-seven royal hats worn for the Queen’s service of Thanksgiving today. What designs here stood out to you? Do you like Lady Gabriella’s hat as much as I do?

I’ll be back tomorrow with coverage of Trooping the Colour where we get to do this all over again!

Trooping the Colour: Extended British Royal Family

Trooping the Colour is wonderful not only because it is Queen Elizabeth’s official birthday celebration but because it is attended by the many members of the extended British Royal Family who we seldom see throughout the year. While the Linley family did not attend this year (along with Princess Anne’s children and grandchildren), the Kent family was well represented. Princess Alexandra of Kent repeated a dove grey hat wrapped in wide ruched sash around the based of the crown and dotted net veil. With her tailored grey jacket, she looked most elegant.Lady Nicholas Windsor, Princess Alexandra of Kent, Lady Helen Taylor and the Countess of St. Andrews, June 13, 2015 | Royal Hats

The Duke and Duchess of Kent’s daughter-in-law, Lady Nicholas Windsor, wore the most avant garde hat of the day, a brimless moulded piece in ecru straw trimmed with a large u-shaped embellishment. While some might think her hat sprouted horns, I liked the unusual trim and Paola wore the piece very well. The Countess of St. Andrews wore a large navy picture hat with square crown and cartwheel brim edged in a wide white stripe; her hat was trimmed with a large white.

Lady Helen Taylor wore a black beret-based percher hat lavishly trimmed with opalescent paillettes and widely woven black net veil.  You can see a detailed photo is creative hat here.

Princess Michael of Kent repeated her angular, pale grey pillbox with dramatic ostrich plume trim. This hat is an excellent pairing with her austere dress and coat and Marie-Christine looked fabulous.

Zenouska Mowatt, Lady Gabriella Windsor and Julia Ogilvy, June 13, 2015 | Royal Hats

Princess Michael’s daughter, Lady Gabriella Windsor, wore a large picture hat in pale pink straw trimmed with three large curling sashes. If this hat is, as I suspect, the OC-875 design from Philip Treacy’s summer collection this year, it features a flat crown and large, cartwheel brim. Princess Alexandra’s daughter-in-law, Julia Ogilvy wore a pink beret trimmed with large flowers while Zenouska Mowatt (Princess Alexandra’s granddaughter) wore a dusty pink curved hat which appeared to be trimmed with silk flowers and a crin overlay on the brim.

The Duchess of Gloucester repeated her raspberry pink straw hat. It’s a fine hat that unfortunately, is not helped by the tulled scarf wrapped around it.

While not visible in photos from today, the Duchess of Gloucester’s daughter-in-law, the Countess of Ulster,  wore a navy percher hat. Lady Sarah Chatto repeated her black straw saucer hat. This draws today’s coverage of Trooping the Colour to a close. Which hat was your favourite on the Buckingham Palace balcony today?
