Some of you have written asking for coverage of this weekend’s Kentucky Derby. I don’t believe a royal hat will appear at this year’s races so I’ll leave the coverage to you- feel free to post any Derby hats and engage in related discussion in the comments of this post. I’ll hold coverage of Grand Duke Jean’s funeral and Dutch Remembrance Day until later on Monday.

For the 70th anniversary of the modern Commonwealth this week, the British monarchy released these throw-back photos that include some wonderful past hats on Her Majesty
On his birthday on Tuesday, King Carl Gustaf was joined by Queen Silvia and their dog, Brandie, to open a ‘rain and rest’ pavilion for visitors of both the 2 and 4-legged varieties at Ormholmen in Drottningholm Castle Off-Leash Park. For this event, the King repeated his trusty brown fedora. 
Queen Margrethe officially commenced the 2019 sailing season with a small trip yesterday on board the royal yacht Dannebrog from Copenhagen to Elsinore. For this, she repeated her nautical navy hat with white brim binding and layered navy and white stacked ribbon hatbands.

Queen Elizabeth was spotted en route to church at Windsor this morning in the pink straw hat with ostrich feather trim by Angela Kelly (made by Stella McLaren) she debuted last year 
The British Hat Guild officially launched this week. A collective of 30 top British milliners (many whose work we regularly admire here), this new association is a collaborative initiative “dedicated to sharing ideas and promoting our unique heritage”.

Days before his coronation, the never-boring new Thai king announced his fourth marriage this week and has declared his new wife as queen. His bride, Suthida Tidjai, previously worked as a flight attendant for Thai Airways before being appointed as one of the king’s bodyguards. Most recently, she was promoted to his head of security and a general in the army. (CNN)
Three sweet portraits of Princess Charlotte, taken by her mum, released on Wednesday for her 4th birthday.
We end this week with a sweet photo shared by Princess Eugnie in celebration of her husband, Jack’s birthday.

Last Friday, April 5, Princess Beatrice visited the Helen Arkell Dyslexia Centre in a black leather bandeau headpiece. While it looks eerily similar to one recently worn by her sister, the two pieces are different (the central knot on this bandeau is visibly bigger).

On Wednesday, members of the Imperial Royal Family visited the Emperor and Empress to offer congratulations on their 60th wedding anniversary. All the princesses were in hats- Crown Princess Masako in a repeated cream pleated bumper; Princesses Kiko, Mako and Kako in cuffed calot hats; Princess Hanako in a pink brimmed hat with ruffled feather trim; and Princess Yuriko in a green silk covered bumper hat with side flower.
 
Princess Nobuko repeated a green silk bumper hat with lace covered crown and Princess Akiko wore a yellow silk bumper hat previously worn by Princess Hanako. Princess Yoko repeated her peach textured pillbox, Princess Tsuguko repeated her peach silk bumper with pleated leaf motif around the outside brim and Princess Hisako repeated a royal blue silk ensemble with bumper hat.

The Cambridges were spotted at Burnham Market international horse trials in Norfolk where they joined Mike and Mia Tindall to watch Zara compete. Prince William sported a natty flat cap.

Princess Charlene was at the Turffontein Racecourse in Johannesburg, South Africa yesterday to attend her namesake race day annual event. She topped her royal blue dress and bolero jacket by Terrence Bray with a black floral and crin fascinator
Rachel Trevor Morgan, Noel Stewart and Edwina Ibbotson have curated a hat exhibition ‘Unveiled- The Craft of Millinery’ that will be open May 8-12 in London (May 8-10 at the Artworkers Guild and May 11-12 at Fenwick of Bond Street). Featuring the work of 14 milliners, the exhibition will also include workshops and a curators talk you can register to attend here. Also launched this week was this year’s Royal Ascot Millinery Collective. So lovely to see an Australian milliner (Jill Humphries of Jill and Jack Millinery in Melbourne) included in this year’s lineup!

Back on February 22,  Princess Hisako wore a smart camel hat with kettle brim (love that sharp white stripe around the outside of the upturned brim) Takamadonomiya Hockey Japan award ceremony
The Swedish and Norwegian monarchs together this week in Seefeld, Austria, for the World Skiing Championships. It’s so nice to see kings in hats- even such casual ones!
Emperor Akihito, Empress Michiko and Princess Kiko attended national meetings on Tuberculosis Prevention in Tokyo on Thursday. Empress Michiko repeated one of her grey discs and Princess Kiko wore a beige bumper hat.
The stunning oyster silk Bruce Oldfield suit and Jane Taylor straw percher hat with roses and feathers the Countess of Wessex wore to the Cambridge’s wedding in April 2011 has gone on display at the Fashion Museum in Bath (a truly fantastic place to visit!). If you have a chance to see it in person, please share your thoughts!
The exhibition with outfits from Princess Eugenie’s wedding opened yesterday at Windsor Castle. It includes the Greville emerald tiara (which has not been on public display before) and the Sarah Cant headpiece Princess Beatrice wore. There’s a great article about the exhibition here on the British monarchy’s website; if you visit Windsor Castle in the next weeks, keep your eyes open!

Back on September 15, Princess Helene of Yugoslavia (granddaughter of Regent Prince Paul of Yugoslavia and King Umberto II of Italy) and  married Stanislas Fougeron in Villeprevost, France. In the final photo below, you’ll see Princess Lea of Belgium in the second row in a cream floral trouser ensemble with wide brimmed hat.

The Prince of Wales in military hats on September 22 to present a new Guidon to The Queen’s own Yeomanry and this morning to present medals to members of The Royal Regiment of Scotland’s Black Watch 3rd Battalion.

The Duchess of Cambridge atttended her friend Sophie Carter’s wedding last weekend in a cornflower blue silk flower and crin bandeau headpiece from Juliette Botterill. It’s such a pretty colour but the combination of this design with the matching dress and coat reads too twee for my liking.

Crown Prince Frederik visited Frederikshavn in military uniform on Monday to celebrate the city’s 200th anniversary

King Carl Gustaf visited several sites in Östergötland on Thursday in his trusty brown fedora hat. 

Princess Hisako and Crown Princess Masako both wore hats in fresh green hues this week- Princess Hisako officially closed the 7th Special Olympics National Summer Games in Aichi on Wednesday in this cream hat with green hatband and starburst bow while Crown Princess Masako wore this pistachio green bowler with brocade hatband on Thursday at the World Social Science Forum in Fukuoka.

Princess Camilla of Bourbon-Two Sicilies brought her daughters to a Fashion 4 Development event in New York. Her younger daughter, Princess Chiara, sported a red feathered fascinator.

Royal Hats

Much has been written about the Duchess of Sussex’s first charity project in support of the Hubb Community Kitchen. Take time to read the cookbook’s forward (see it here)– clearly written in her own voice, it’s compelling and beautiful.

Mike and Zara Tindall joined the first leg of the Blue Marine Foundation fundraiser cycle ride from London to Monaco last week (they joined in from London to Dover).

Prince Albert and Princess Charlene brought along Princess Gabriella and Prince Jacques for a ceremony yesterday to christen two yachts.

King Carl Gustaf, who usually presents awards, found himself on the receiving end yesterday when he caught the largest cod in an Øresund strait fishing derby. He picked up his medal in a casual baseball hat.

Young Prince Hisahito celebrated his 12th birthday on Thursday. He was photographed arriving at the Imperial Royal Palace to visit his grandparents with his mum, Princess Kiko, who wore a streamlined, oyster, brimless hat.

Crown Prince Naruhito departed Japan yesterday for France. He was seen off at the airport by members of the Imperial family including Princess Kiko, Princess Mako, Princess Yoko and Princess Hisako in a coordinated group of cream and blue hats (Crown Princess Masako was also in attendance but did not wear a hat).

We end the week with my favourite royal photo of the week, taken yesterday in Scotland when the Duchess of Rothsay (as is her Scottish title) visited the cancer support charity Maggie’s Centers. So sweet.
