Last Week’s Extras

This post is later than usual thanks to a long weekend here in Canada. Stay tuned later today for a review of all the hats seen yesterday at Remembrance Day commemorations in London.

Princess Hisako in a black hat with red puff feather trim the first weekend of November in Nagoya
Last Monday, members of the Imperial royal family attended a tea party for the recipients of the Order of Culture and the Persons of Cultural Merit at the Imperial Palace. While the Empress and Princess Kiko wore kimonos, Crown Princess Masako topped her pastel silk suit with a matching silk covered hat with high, kettle brim. It looks like the outside of the brim is covered in embroidery.

The Duke of Sussex attended the field of remembrance service at Westminster Abbey last Thursday in the black frockcoat uniform and cap of the Blues and Royals, his former regiment.

The following new millinery designs caught my eye last week:
Chic mustard felt stylised trilby with amazing crin hatbands from Czech milliner Jolana Kotabova
Such fun ostrich pompom trimmed berets from British milliner William Chambers
Stunning green houndstooth saucer with flying cream under-brim bow from Melbourne milliner Louise MacDonald
Simply beautiful blush straw sidesweep with silk orchids & curling quills from British milliner Vivien Sheriff
Love the lines on this seamed flat cap from London-based milliner Karen Henriksen
Prettiest pink chevron button percher with pearl centered straw bow by Irish milliner Alison Roe
Unique headpiece of interlocking circles (with amazing texture!) from Australian brand Peacock Millinery

And from Melbourne milliner Lauren Ritchie, this  magenta pillbox with brilliantly graphic 3-D trim.

The Imperial royals hosted the final garden party of the Heisei era (Emperor Akihito’s reign) last Friday and braved rain in beautiful kimonos (including Crown Princess Masako, who hasn’t been seen in one in a while).

Wrapping things up with this sweet photo of the Prince of Wales and his youngest grandson, shared in the recent BBC documentary on the prince’s 70th birthday

Thursday, March 8: The Duke of Edinburgh in his well worn Panama hat for a carriage drive at Windsor Castle

It has been a very quiet two weeks of royal hats- something that will change next week with a Te Deum mass for the new Swedish princess born this morning and the Cheltenham Festival. In the meantime- any thoughts about these hats?

Remembrance Sunday 2017- Part 2

Members of the British royal family attended the annual Remembrance Day commemoration service at  The Cenotaph at Whitehall in London yesterday. For the first time, the task of laying Her Majesty’s wreath was passed to the Prince of Wales while Queen Elizabeth watched above from a balcony in the Foreign Office.

The Queen wore a new hat in black felt. The tall asymmetrical crown features a moulded crescent shape on the top and the brim, a short cartwheel. The hat is simply but beautifully trimmed in a black velvet hatband, black velvet brim edging and a multi-looped black felt bow at the side.

Duke of Edinburgh Supports Marines In Final Official Engagement

The Duke of Edinburgh conducted his final official public engagement this morning in the Forecourt of Buckingham Palace. As Captain General of the Royal Marines, he attended a parade to mark the finale of the 1664 Global Challenge, a widespread fundraising campaign taking place this year. Prince Philip stepped out in the rain for the parade in a classic bowler hat, bringing an end to a career of military and public service that extends 75 years.

Queen And Duke Host Holyrood Garden Party

Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh hosted a garden party today at the Palace of Holyroodhouse. To oversee the 27,000 cups of tea and 20,000 sandwiches served at the event, the Queen donned a new hat.

In soft pink straw, the design features an upturned straw brim and square crown covered in the same bouclé as her accompanying coat. Pale pink silk magnolia blooms and pink feathers nestled inside the brim complete the piece. It’s a pretty hat that I think would have been much improved if the whole thing had been fashioned in straw.

The Duke looked to be in far better shape than his top hat, which is showing wear at the centre front, beneath the hatband. The Duke of York also attended, in his black silk top hat.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon was also in attendance, sporting a sharp navy button base cocktail hat with flower, feather and large looped bow trim.
