British Royals Remember Lady Soames

The Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall and Princess Alexandra attended a memorial Service of Thanksgiving for Lady Mary Soames at Westminster Abbey yesterday. Lady Soames, who was the last surviving child of Winston Churchill and mother to Prince Charles’ close friend Conservative MP Sir Nicholas Soames, died at the age of 91 on May 31, 2014. For this event, Camilla repeated her black straw picture wrapped in ostrich feathers. We have seen this hat twice earlier this year and yesterday’s pairing with her very structured suit was my favourite ensemble so far. I think the voluminous hat balances well with a sharply tailored outfit and Camilla looked marvelous.

Princess Alexandra wore an elegant black felt hat with slightly raised brim. The hat was trimmed in a triple band of velvet around the crown, a velvet bow at the side, and black net tulle wrapped around the brim. The sloped brim is really lovely on Alexandra, and the delicate tulle lends a very light and pretty touch to this hat.

I thought both the Duchess and Princess Alexandra looked wonderfully elegant yesterday. What did you think of their hats?

British Royals Participate in Remembrance Service

The Remembrance Service at the Cenotaph on Whitehall yesterday saw participation from nearly every branch of the British Royal Family. Earlier today was saw hats worn by the Queen, the Duchesses of Cornwall and Cambridge, and the Countess of Wessex– now we’re going to take a peek at hats worn by the rest of the family.

Princess Alexandra wore a simple black wool hat with rounded crown and downward sloping brim. The hat was trimmed with a sash of crushed velvet, which was repeated in piping round the edge of the brim and on a collar on her coat.

The Duchess of Gloucester wore a small black velvet hat with a bumper-style tightly upfolded brim. The hat was trimmed by an abstract folded silk bow and the addition of a small enamel poppy brooch. I thought the addition of this brooch was a lovely touch.

The British Royal men all appeared in the hats and coats of their respective military dress uniforms.

Princess Alexandra Opens Emergency Services Facility

Last Friday, Princess Alexandra of Kent officially opened the new Bromsgrove Police and Fire Station. She looked characteristically elegant in a purple coat topped with a picture hat in a lighter shade of purple wool felt. The crown of this has is a little too tall for my liking but I adore the band around the crown, in the same shade as Princess Alexandra’s coat. The contrasting use of two shades of violet is so pretty on this hat, isn’t it?

Princess Alexandra Visits Shropshire

Princess Alexandra visited Telford today to celebrate the Shropshire Star’s 50th anniversary and visit a local farm. For this day out, she repeated a cream straw hat with square crown and nearly flat brim. The simple shape of this hat was contrasted by its embellishment- silk flower and leaf trim, a wrap of open weave net and a band around the crown. I like this hat well enough (especially considering it is at least 15 years old) although the placement of that silk rose seems off balance. The colour is a little bland (the lighting in the photograph below is unflattering to say the least) but I suppose every royal female needs a go-to cream picture hat in her millinery wardrobe. This one does the job quite nicely. What do you think of this hat?
