Autumn/Winter 2017 collections are showing up online and while I’m still enjoying sunny, summery days (and food!) in my part of the world, these wintry designs were too beautiful not to catch my eye:

Sharp wool boater with black leather flower trim from Mind Your Bonce Millinery
Teal button cocktail hat with tall ruffle made by Sally Ashlin at Georgiana Millinery
Wool fedoras in the most luxuriously wonderful jewel tones from British milliner Philip Ian Wright
Wonderful beaded crown on this oversized fedora by Jane Taylor
Beautiful sculpted cloche hats- white from Bay Willow Designs and pink from Tracy Chaplin Millinery
Vibrantly hued silk and velvet turbans from Nerida Fraiman
Lovely leaf trimmed powder pink beret base cocktail hat from Rosie Olivia
Unexpected and interesting mix of grey felt and white windowpane crin from Cara Meehan London

And just when we thought Philip Treacy had done everything that could possibly be done to a hat, a peak at his upcoming Autumn/Winter 2017 collection looks like it will feature zippers. Unexpected, and amazing!

Hat Surprises From British Royals at Braemar Games & Sunday Church

Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh were joined by their two eldest children Saturday for the Braemar Games. For the event, held each year at Fife Memorial Park, the queen repeated her pink felt hat with square crown and short, cartwheel brim. Her gold feather brooch tied wonderfully with the feather trim on her hat!

The millinery surprise at yesterday’s event came from Princess Anne, who decorated her well worn navy felt trilby with the same navy and cream straw figure eight bows and cream feathers as adorned the straw hat she debuted on July 13. I’m not usually a fan of mixing straw and felt on the same design but anything Princess Anne does to jazz up her hats I will fully endorse. Well played, don’t you agree?

Clearly, a good time was had by all!

Millinery surprises continued today when Queen Elizabeth stepped out for church in a black lace covered hat not seen since it’s single outing during a visit to America in May 2007 (a hat several of you have wished to make another appearance!). The photos aren’t good through a passing car window with Braemar forests casting an olive hue over the piece but it looks just as lovely as it did when we first saw it. Princess Anne repeated her trilby (I think that’s the fastest repeat of a royal hat we’ve ever seen) without the straw decoration.

I absolutely adore that these women, after entire lifetimes of wearing hats, are still able to surprise us with their millinery choices. What do you think of these hats worn up in Scotland this weekend?

Royal Hats

Queen Elizabeth wore a new teal blue hat to church last Sunday. Frustratingly, there are no pictures I can share but you can see it here. Today, she made a surprise appearance at the Aboyne Highland Games in her lilac straw hat with flowers by Rachel Trevor Morgan.

Princess Elena’s predictable ‘wear fedora to bullfight’ routine was stirred up this week with a chocolate version paired with jazzy hot pink tassel earrings. The charming photo of her children (with Froilan in a baseball cap) was taken today at the 36th Copa Del Rey Mafre Sailing Cup in Palma de Mallorca

The following hats caught my eye this week:

Wide brimmed natural straw boater from The Hat Shop in New York
Amazing sense of movement on this raspberry pink leather and crin headpiece from Aussie brand Jill and Jack Millinery
Unexpected and interesting feather trim on this Susanne Juul design
Show stopping white straw and lace cocktail hat from Irish brand Montgomery Millinery
Classic and crisp black and white trilby from Jill Courtemanche Millinery
And for a fall trilby, this striking electric blue felt one with gold maple leaf from Rachel Trevor Morgan

 Royal Hats

I’m reluctant to provide another platform for complaints but as Prince Henrik’s rather unsavory announcement made international headlines this week, it deserves acknowledgement, however petty and ungracious it is (New York Times)

New photo of Prince Louis of Luxembourg with his sons, Prince Noah and Prince Gabriel, released this week for Louis’ 31st birthday (Luxarazzi)

And finally, lovely snaps of the Spanish king and queen with their daughters taken this week during their annual summer vacation in Palma de Mallorca

Hats From the Past: Christening of Prince William

Royal Hats to this day, 35 years ago, when Prince William was christened.

Princess Diana wore a pink straw hat by John Boyd with a gently upcurled side brim, wide silk hatband and side bow. Interestingly, the hat would undergo a renovation (reshaped brim, narrowed hatband and bow moved to the back) when it appeared again the following March during a tour of Australia.

Queen Elizabeth wore a ruched turban by Frederick Fox in the same dotted blue silk organza as her coat, trimmed with a lavish spray of trailing feathers (you can see a closeup view at this post). The Queen Mother wore a pale blue straw hat in her go-to cloche shape with upturned front brim, trimmed with a net veil and blue silk flowers.

Princess Alexandra, named one of Prince William’s godmothers (in yellow at left, below), wore a simple white bowler hat with short, upturned brim.

Princess Anne, seated behind her mother below, wore a vibrant blue brimless hat. Queen Anne-Marie of Greece, behind Princess Alexandra, wore a large white pillbox with what looks like a large bloom at the back.

I think the hat shapes here are all reflective of early 1980s millinery fashion, perhaps, with the exception of the hat worn by the Queen Mother, whose signature style and shape became a nearly timeless look for her. Your thoughts about the other hats worn to this event?

Princess Royal Attends RAF Centenary Parade

Princess Anne was at RAF Brize Norton this morning to attend the centenary Parade of No 101 Squadron. For this milestone anniversary, she wore a new hat in navy straw with diagonal crown and upswept brim, trimmed with navy and white feathers and a looped straw bow at the side. Anne has upped her hat game in recent months and this design is another great addition to her hat closet.
