Swedish Te Deum and Name Day Celebrations

Members of the Swedish royal family attended a Te Deum service of thanksgiving in the chapel of the Royal Palace in Stockholm to celebrate the safe arrival of Princess Adrienne, born to Princess Madeleine and Chris O’Neill last Friday morning.

While Crown Princess Victoria, Princess Sofia and Princess Christina did not wear hats, Countess Marianne Bernadotte attended in a brown fur papakha hat and matching coat (undoubtedly pieces that have been in her wardrobe for decades).

Today was also Crown Princess Victoria’s name day; Prince Daniel and Princess Estelle joined in on celebrations (receiving a marching band, greeting royal well wishers) held in the palace courtyard. The occasion marked Princess Estelle’s formal hat debut in a navy velour tam simply trimmed with a pale blue ribbon around the cuff base perimeter. With her matching velour collar and faux fur cuffed boots, the hat topped a sweet and appropriately warm ensemble on the young princess.

 While the Te Deum hats were few in number, Princess Estelle’s official hat wearing debut added some millinery excitement to royal events in Sweden today. There has been a progression of hair bows, hair ornaments and decorated headbands for the young princess that slowly and naturally led to her first hat today- the first of hundreds of hats she will wear over the course of her royal life. For a family that doesn’t wear a lot of hats, I think this process of millinery introduction for Princess Estelle has been handled really well.

The Royal House of Norway released a new photo of Princess Ingrid last weekend, taken by her father Crown Prince Haakon, to mark her 14th birthday.

King Carl Gustaf in his trusty fedora and Queen Silvia in a fur hat on Tuesday for their visit to Kiruna (Swedish Monarchy)

Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Daniel, Princess Estelle and Prince Oscar in cosy knit wool hats to open a multisports facility in Daniel’s hometown on Thursday.  The prince also donned hockey gear for a charity match.

Princess Kiko wore a new black felt cloche with diagonal crown wrap on Wednesday to the Japanese Olympic team’s send off to the Pyeong Chang Olympics. While so similar to Queen Elizabeth’s diagonal wrapped crown cloche hats, this one somehow feels much more modern and sleek.

Also on Wednesday, Princess Alexandra wore a black hat with grey faux fur cuff brim for a visit to The Old Moat Garden Centre in Epsom.

Congratulations to Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank on the announcement of their engagement. While we’ve yet to hear details, this means potentially two major hatted events (in addition to Trooping the Colour and Ascot etc.) for the British Royal Family in 2018. BRING ON THE HATS.

Sweet red double hair bow for Princess Estelle on Thursday to receive the Swedish royal family’s Christmas trees along with her mum and brother (Swedish Royal Court). She also wore a glittery hairbow and feather boa to a pantomime theatre performance yesterday.

June is such a busy month here at Royal Hats, it’s no wonder we missed Princess Nobuko paying a visit to the JS Takanami. Her hat, a wide brimmed white straw design, has an unusually shaped brim and looks to be embellished with some sort of net tulle wrap and a bow at the back. It’s a unique shape for an Imperial royal hat. 

Kensington Palace confirmed that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will attend church with the Queen and royal family on Christmas morning. For those of you waiting for Meghan’s first royal hat, I suspect that will be it. Also- mark your calendars for May 19 and hope for a daytime wedding. Daytime = HATS!!

Christening of Prince Gabriel

Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia were joined by family and friends today in the chapel at Drottningholm Palace for the christening of their second son, Prince Gabriel.

Princess Sofia broke with tradition and wore traditional folk dress. Her costume is from Dalarna, the area where she was raised and the duchy of which Prince Gabriel was named Duke at the time of his birth, making the sartorial choice a personal and sentimental one. Her vibrant ensemble included a traditional hand painted/embroidered red cap edged in cotton lace.

Queen Silvia topped a slate blue silk dress and coat with a veiled lace headpiece. The texture and sheen of the headpiece is a beautiful compliment to the streamlined coat and the colour, while muted, looks wonderful on her.

Princess Madeleine, who was named one of Prince Gabriel’s godparents, also made a sentimental touch with her millinery. Her lilac grey twisted silk headpiece with pink silk rose at the back is a clear nod to a similar peach design that Queen Silvia wore on August 31, 1970 for Prince Carl Philip’s baptism (and that Crown Princess Victoria had reinvented in June 2014 for Princess Leonore’s christening). We didn’t get to see the headpiece directly against Madeleine’s printed silk Valentino dress but it looks like it would balance really well.

Crown Princess Victoria topped a stunning red suit with a leather hair bow. At an event where small headpieces reigned, I see the rationale in this choice but I’m not a fan of the twee shape or mismatch of shades between the bow and the suit. My reservations about the hairbow aside, the red suit is divine on Victoria and I adore her brave use of deep maroon accessories with it. And Princess Estelle’s matching maroon Mary Janes? SO adorable.

…our good friend Josine over at Mode Koningin Maxima noticed a bow separating the two designs. Milliner Fabienne Delvigne confirmed the two hats are in fact, different (with slightly different crown shapes). The whole thing leaves me scratching my own head and asking, WHY?
