Funeral of King Michael of Romania

Representatives from several royal houses gathered in Bucharest on Saturday for the funeral of Romania’s last king.

King Michael’s daughters, led by Crown Princess Margareta who is now styled as ‘Custodian of the Crown of Romania’, all wore conservatively styled black hats or veils. Princess Margareta’s bumper hat features a large, double bow at the back while Princess Elena’s hat has a cuffed brim in the same fur as her coat.  Royal Musings reported yesterday that Nicholas Medforth-Mills and his fiance Alina-Maria Binder were quietly married in a civil service (their religious wedding remains set for next summer) recently, presumably so that the couple could attend the funeral together.

Princess Muna of Jordan wore a white lace veil. Behind her, Princess Isabelle of Liechtenstein wore a large black straw hat with wide, exaggerated mushroom brim. The crown appears to be wrapped in a wide straw hatband (almost in the style of a bumper brim) overlaid in a dotted sheer organza or crin.

Belgian Royal Wedding: The Guests

Royal HatsYesterday’s wedding of Prince Amedeo, Archduke of Austria-Este and Elisabetta Rosboch von Wolkenstein was attended by a number of royal guests from Austria, Luxembourg and Liechtenstein. Archduke Carl Christian and Archduchess Marie Astrid of Austria attended with their entire family (Carl Christian is a first cousin of Prince Amedeo’s father Prince Lorenz while Marie Astrid is a first cousin of his mother Princess Astrid). Marie Astrid wore a sweet cream straw cloche style hat with raised brim in the front. The hat was trimmed with a slate huted straw band around the crown and slate and cream woven flowers on the side. The 1920s style hat was a great shape on Marie Astrid and I thought it was both fun and flattering.

Archduchess Kathleen (below, left) and Archduchess Gabriella (below, right), did not appear to wear hats. Archduchess Marie Christine looked to be wearing a gold hair ornament of some fashion (below, center).

Archduchess Adelaide wore a black fascinator with wiry feathers and a black dotted veil.

While Achduchess Marie Astrid’s sister, Princess Margretha of Liechtenstein did not wear a hat (nor did her daugthers), her sister-in-law Countess Diane de Nassau did. Countess Diane wore a simple natural straw picture hat edged in a white band around the brim and a black band around the crown. The clean lines of the hat were an excellent balance for her bold black and red dress.  She is seen here with her husband, Prince Jean of Luxembourg (below, left) and brother-in-law, Prince Guillaume of Luxembourg.

Archduchess Anna-Gabriele of Austria wore a small white rose fascinator with petite feathers. Belgian born Princess Isabelle of Liechtenstein pulled out a summer version of the show stopping hat and matching bow-trimmed jacket that she wore to Prince Felix and Princess Clair’s wedding last September. This lavender straw hat featured a sweeping brim that was raised on one side and a spray of pale purple hued feathers. While and I like the white trim on the edge of this hat’s brim, its dramatic shape and beautiful colour, I think this hat would be better paired with a summery floral dress instead of this turtleneck based ensemble.

The wedding guest list also included; Princess Beatrice of YorkArchduchess Maria Beatrice of Austria-Este and Count Arco-Riprand ZinnenbergArchduchess Isabella of Austria-Este and Count Andrea Czarnocki-LucheschiArchduke Carl Peter of Austria and Princess Alexandra of Wrede; and Archduchess Maria Constanza of Austria and Franz Josef von Auersperg, none of whom wore hats. The apparent lack of dress code at this wedding was perplexing to me. We saw hats, day dresses, full-lenth gowns, morning suits, leisure suits and everything in between. I love a royal wedding with a clear dress code (preferably, one that requires the ladies in hats!). That being said, it was a colourful day of royal hats in Rome to celebrate this beautiful young couple. Which hats were your favourites?

Luxembourg Royal Wedding: Royal Guests

This wedding was attended by a number of “minor” royals from across Europe. Princess Maria-Laura of Belgium, who is also Archduchess of Austria-Este through her paternal side, wore a brimless bright pink hat with swarthy net veil.

Lord and Lady Nicholas Windsor, seen here behind Archduke Imre and Archduchess Kathleen of Austria, were the only members of the British royal family in attendance (although their attendance was not in an official capacity but a personal one). Lady Nicholas wore a new hat that is difficult to see here but that appears to be a brimless sphere in cream straw. I think it’s a great shape for Paola although I will wait for a better view to weigh in further.

Fürstin Gabriela zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Sayn wore a very beautiful beige picture hat with a diagonal band that wrapped around the crown down to the brim, edged in black. I think the hat would be improved with the removal of the red carnation flower but it is still a beautifully shaped hat. (On a side note, I get a kick out of Gabriela’s husband Fürst Alexander stealing some happy iphone snaps in the second shot!)

Archduchess Alexandra of Austria topped her cream suit (I love the pleated ruffles around the cuffs and collar) with a classic black cartwheel-brimmed hat. The oversize bow on the hat was not to my taste and made the hat look rather dated.

Archduchess Hélène of Austria wore a very small grey ribon fascinator. I was disappointed in this headpiece; Hélène’s beautiful sharply graphic suit could have carried a much more dramatic hat and I thought this crumpled bit of ribbon did not measure up. Hélène’s daughter Archduchess Priscilla of Austria wore the same cream hat she wore to Archduke Imre and Archduchess Kathleen’s wedding last year. This hat is fascinating to me because underneath the mass of wide ribbon trim this hat is a simple straw bowler. I think the ribbon trim makes the shape work very well and it is very flattering on  Priscilla’s oval-shaped face.

While not officially a royal, Donna Beatrice Borromeo attended with her longtime partner, Pierre Casiraghi. Beatrice wore a dramatic headpiece of two black feathers that wrapped around her head in a wide spiral. I’m not sure I like the way the headpiece attached to the side of her head but the overall effect of this hat was unique and startlingly beautiful.

Archduchess Anna-Gabriele of Austria wore one of my favourite hats of the day, a wide brimmed taupe straw picture hat with a short crown. It’s such a fun hat that I thought looked lovely with Anna-Gabriele’s short hairstyle.

I think the most showstopping hat of the day was worn by Princess Isabelle of Liechtenstein. Her choice, a gigantic purple mushroom shaped picture hat trimmed in white edging and voluminous tulle veil, was dramatic to say the least. The hat was a little over-the-top for my taste and I am still perplexed by the outfit she chose to pair it with. Picture hats and turtlenecks just don’t work well together… ever.

I think this showstopper is a great hat to end my hat coverage of Claire and Felix’s wedding. I’m sure you join me in wishing this lovely young couple a lifetime of love and happiness.
