Danish Royals Host Vietnamese State Visit

The Danish Royal Family welcomed Vietnamese president His Excellency Truong Tan Sang and Madam Mai Thi Hanh on a state visit to Denmark this morning (a video of the arrival can be viewed on the Danish Royal website here),  For this welcome, Queen Margrethe repeated the turquoise blue beret-style hat we saw her wear just last weekend in Sweden. Today’s photos however, revealed an element of this hat more clearly than we have seen it before- notice the stripe of beaded trim running diagonally across the hat (most visible in the third photo). It adds a bit of sparkle and interest, doesn’t it? I continue to really like this hat for Queen Margrethe.

Crown Princess Mary repeated one of her most frequently worn hats- a black wool picture hat with square crown, black straw brim and double feather trim. It is a versatile, clean and modern hat that looks great on Mary, particularly when she wears her hair in a chignon as she did today. I also really loved it paired with her teal blue coat.

Princess Marie repeated the hat she last wore in May for Prince Nicolai’s confirmation. A close look at this hat (see here) shows it is actually a navy straw fedora with a net veil wrapped around the crown and a silk flower on the side. I like to think of it as a “dressed up” fedora and I like it very much on Marie.

Princess Benedikte repeated her fuschia pink straw wide-brimmed picture hat but instead of wearing the brim down as she did last time, she turned it up on one side. I always thought the colour and shape of this hat was wonderful on Benedikte and seeing the added versatility of the brim today made me love it even more.

I thought the Danes’ millinery choices were fantastic today- certainly better than what we saw their Swedish cousins choose yesterday.  Which hat in Denmark today was your favourite?

Prince Joachim and Princess Marie Commemorate Flag Day

Today is the the celebration of Flag Day in Denmark, a day that honors all those who were injured or lost in overseas military service. Prince Joachim and Princess Marie attended a remembrance ceremony at Kastellet (part of Copenhagen fortress) this afternoon. For the memorial, Prince Joachim wore military uniform while Princess Marie wore an black fasincator made of curled fabric petals. I believe this fascinator is new (it looks different than the one she wore back in April which I think, had some feathers) and I thought it looked very elegant on her, especially with her hair back in a chignon. What do you all think of this headpiece?

Swedish Royal Wedding: Danish Royals

With close relations between the Swedish and Danish Royal Families (the Swedish King and Danish Queen are first cousins), there was predictably large group of Danish Royals in attendance today. Crown Princess Mary wore her most informal tiara, the Midnight Tiara. I was not surprised by this choice but I was not sold on it paired with her formal watermelon pink dress and cape. A cape is about as formal as it gets and I think her ruby tiara would have been a much better compliment to this gown.

Princess Marie predictably wore her Dagmar Floral Tiara; I say this was predictable tiara choice because it is the only tiara she has ever worn. I’m not complaining, mind you, as this delicate tiara looks great on petite Marie. I thought it was also the perfect match for her equally delicate embroidered pink gown. Lovely all around.

Princess Benedikte, who is Princess Madeleine’s godmother, wore one of her standard tiaras, Queen Ingrid’s Star and Pearl Tiara (also known as Queen Ingrid’s Star and Spike Tiara). It’s tough to assess from these photos but this tiara is not one of my favourites. Her hairstyle makes it look less spiky but it’s still spikes and stars. I’m not sure there’s much you can do with that.

Funeral of Danish Count Christian of Rosenborg

The funeral of Count Christian of Rosenborg (1942-2013) was held at Lyngby Church today. Count Christian (formerly Prince Christian of Denmark) was the son of Prince Knud (who was a younger brother of King Frederik IX) and was a cousin to Queen Margrethe. He and his older brother Ingolf were in line to inherit the Danish throne until changes to the Danish succession Act in 1953 allowed for women to inherit. Christian was a naval officer like his father and uncle and retired from the Royal Danish Navy ten years ago. He and his wife Countess Anne-Dorthe were fixtures at the big royal events before their health began to deteriorate a number of years ago.

The funeral was attended by Queen Margrethe who repeated an elegant black straw hat with wide silk band around the crown.

Princess Benedickte wore an embellished black straw hat with a slightly raised brim on one side.

Princess Marie repeated the dark grey Garbo hat she wore last October for the Slovakian state visit.

Princess Astrid of Norway also attended. She wore a black hat with rolled brim, veil and flower at the back.

Countess Sussie of Rosenborg, wife of Christian’s brother Ingolf, wore a black straw hat with raised brim, flat crown and poof of feathers at the side.

Count Christian’s three daughters, Countess Camilla, Countess Josephine and Countess Feodora welcomed guests to their father’s funeral. Each wore a black straw hat with modest detail.

Confirmation of Danish Prince

Prince Nikolai of Denmark, son of Prince Joachim and grandson of Queen Margrethe, was confirmed today at Fredensborg Palace Church by Bishop Erik Norman Svendsen. While it was a private event, the royal family appeared for a brief photocall after the service, before a private lunch. A brief video of The Royal Family taken just after the confirmation can be viewed on the Danish Monarchy website here.

Queen Margrethe wore a new hat for the occasion in beautiful marine blue. Margrethe looks great in picture hats and this one, with a contrasting white brim trimmed in the same blue as the crown, was beautiful and unique. Princess Marie (current wife of Prince Joachim) continued the blue theme in a navy straw hat with net wrapped around the crown  and a side flower. Marie last wore this hat for the 350th anniversary of the Danish Supreme Court in February 2011 and it’s a lovely hat on her. The shape might be a little plain and I’m not taken with the slapped-on flower but the colour on her is spectacular.

The Countess of Frederiksborg, Queen Margrethe and Princess Marie | The Royal Hats BlogPrince Nikolai’s mother, the Countess of Frederiksborg, wore a large feather fascinator. It’s gloriously over the top (it’s nearly the same size as Alexandra’s face!) and contrasts nicely with her dark hair but for this occasion, I think I would have preferred her in a hat. What do you think?

Prince Nikolai’s godparents and extended family were also in attendance. His maternal grandmother, Christina Manley, wore a small fuchsia hat with upturned brim and black bow to coordinate with her fuchsia and black suit. His maternal aunt, Nicola Baird,  wore a small cream feathered fascinator that looked like an afterthought plunked on her head. I would have loved her to wear a large cream picture hat to balance out the large print of her lovely wrap dress instead of that too-small fascinator. Nikolai’s godmother, Camilla Flint, wore a gorgeous chocolate brown picture hat with tilted brim and ruched crown that beautifully contrasted against her blue patterned frock.

My favourite hat of the day was tied between Queen Margrethe’s new blue and white picture hat and the beautiful chocolate brown hat worn by Camilla Flint. Which one is your favourite?
