The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry have been been all over the news this week speaking about their “Heads Together” campaign in support of mental health issues. And finally, the Imperial royals held their first spring garden party this week. We usually see the ladies in suits and hats for this event but this year, they all wore kimonos and the sight is magnificent.

Swedish Royals Honour Attack Victims

Members of the Swedish Royal Family gathered in Stockholm today to honour the four victims (and 15 people who were injured) of last week’s terrorist attack. King Carl Gustaf led the family in a black trilby hat.

Crown Princess Victoria repeated her Garbo hat in black rabbit fur felt with gently curved brim. The hat is simply trimmed with a Petersham ribbon hatband and rough edged bow, which Victoria wore at the back (as opposed to the front, where we saw it last time).

Swedish Royals Remember Winter War

On Monday, Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Carl Philip undertook a joint engagement at Finland Park, paying tribute to Swedish volunteers during the 1939-1940 Winter War. Princess Victoria looked smart in a wide brimmed navy felt hat simply trimmed with a black hatband.

The austere hat works very well with Victoria’s beautifully tailored Ida Sjöstedt coat and her silver jewellery gives the ensemble a lovely hit of sparkle and shine. On its own, the hat is not a terribly exciting one but styled as well it is here, it really doesn’t need to be.

Lovely portrait of Prince Christian released for the occasion of his 11th birthday. It was a great counterpoint to news also from the Danish Court that Crown Prince Frederick fractured his neck in an incident involving a trampoline (something his mother had a quick response for). It appears he will make a full recovery.

Opening of Swedish Parliament

Members of the Swedish Royal Family gathered in Stockholm yesterday for the opening of parliament dressed in the  traditional black and white dress code associated with this event. Queen Silvia led her family in a repeated white ruched straw headpiece with wide bow at the back. The lovely movement of this piece, which swirls around Silvia’s head, almost makes up for it’s open crown. I have long disliked such open crowned hats but paired with an impeccably cut black suit and pearls, this one almost works.

The three Princesses sported chignon hairstyles, each topped with a fascinator style headpiece. There has been growing controversy here at Royal Hats over the merits of this style of millinery and, like them or love them, I think each worked particularly well with this hairstyle.

This is the third outing for Crown Princess Victoria’s layered headpiece of black and white butterflies and while still not my favourite for her, I think it worked better with her Paule Ka dress than it has with any previous ensemble.

Princess Madeleine’s black free form shaped headpiece was worn as a calot the last time we saw it. I think the scale of this piece suits the placement we saw here and the combination of hard edged headpiece with the very delicate lace collar of her blouse made for an interesting contrast.

For my favourite ensemble of the day, Princess Sofia topped a streamlined Max Mara black dress with an over-size white camellia bloom headpiece. Black and white ensembles can be tough to balance but the scale of this headpiece works so beautifully with the dress, understated jewellery and a large chignon. The resulting combination is timeless, classic and so very chic.
