Swedish Royals Welcome Portuguese President on State Visit

The Swedish Royal Family welcomed Portugese President Aníbal Cavaco Silva and Mrs. Silva on a three day state visit to Sweden today.  Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel welcomed them at the airport; Princess Victoria repeated the black beret we saw just a few days ago at the opening of Swedish Parliament.

Mrs. Silva wore my favourite hat of the day, a cornflower blue wool pillbox with coordinating net trim. I thought this hat worked very nicely with her haircut and the placement was perfect (neither too far forward nor too far back, as we often see with pillbox hats). Queen Silvia repeated a large bow fascinator in chocolate and tan straw. While I am a fan of the fascinator, I think I prefer Silvia in more traditional hat shapes.

Queen Silvia and Princess Victoria Attend Synod Meeting

Queen Silvia and Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden attended an Service yesterday morning at Uppsala Cathedral. to open meetings of the Swedish General Synod. Queen Silvia did not wear a hat but Princess Victoria went with what appears to now be her millinery uniform- hair pulled back into a chignon and topped off with a feathery/flowery fascinator. This look was in hues of pink-tinted beige (last time was white and the time before, pink again). Please don’t misunderstand me- I am happy to see Victoria in a hat for a daytime engagement (something that does not happen very often). I just would be much happier if we saw a little more variety the hats she chooses and the way she wears them.

UPDATE: Reader Ruth pointed out that Queen Silvia wore a a hat yesterday afterall! This burgundy calot sat on the back of Silvia’s head and blended in quite well with her dark hair. I have a hunch in person, the hat stood out a little more and coordinated nicely with her burgundy purse and shoes.

Swedish Opening of Parliament

The Swedish Royal Family were all in attendance yesterday for the Opening of Parliament. The day began with an inter-religious service at the Cathedral in Stockholm. In years past, the family has worn black and white and they continued this tradition for yesterday’s event. Queen Silvia wore what at first glance looked to be a large white pillbox wrapped in layers of gossamer straw. Upon closer inspection, however, the hat turned out to be a giant white doughnut with a huge bow at the back. From the front, I thought she looked lovely. The view from the back, however, was an entirely different question.

Designer: unconfirmed. I strongly suspect Fabienne Delvigne

Crown Princess Victoria also wore a hat but to much greater success! Her rigid black wool beret was trimmed with wool buttons and a single, curled feather. I don’t believe we have seen Victoria in a beret before and I thought this shape looked great on her. I just wish her hair would be a little less severe.

Princess Madeleine skipped hats altogether and went with a large black Chanel-type bow around her chignon. While it’s not a hat, the look on her is quite classic and elegant.

Crown Princess Victoria has my pick for best hat of this bunch. What do you think?

Swedish Ruby Jubilee Part 1

The Swedish Royal Family attended a mass this morning in the chapel of the Royal Palace in Stockholm to celebrate the 40th anniversary of King Carl Gustaf’s reign. For this important event, Queen Silvia wore a new hat- a peacock blue straw classic pillbox with a small bow at the back. Silvia has a long history of wearing pillboxes and I thought the scale and colour of this one was really lovely on her.

September 15, 1973 was not only was the day that Carl Gustaf ascended the Swedish throne of Sweden- it was also the same day that Prince Daniel was born. For this double celebration, Crown Princess Victoria wore a new white rose fascinator to compliment her amazing white Chanel dress. While I prefer a less harsh hairstyle on Victoria, her overall look today was very refined and elegant.

Princess Madeleine was also in white and topped off her black and white Valentino jacket with a new pointed black callot headpiece. This hat made me scratch my own head… I thought the classic coat and dress just didn’t work with this pointy half-hat. From the side, this hat looked like a kerchief and I’m afraid it was my least favourite of the day.

The star today was, however, this family’s youngest member. Little Princess Estelle, who joined in the balcony appearance following the church service, wore a white bow in her hair. I know this does not really constitute a hat but Estelle was simply too adorable not to include in this post.

Swedish Royals Remember Princess Lilian

The Swedish Royal family attended a memorial service for Princess Lilian today in Stockholm (Princess Lilian passed away March 10 of this year and her funeral was March 16). For this event, Queen Silvia repeated a white straw pleated calot hat trimmed with rosettes and net veil.   It is a great hat on her and I particularly liked its pairing today with this soft grey plaid boucle suit jacket.

Crown Princess Victoria wore a flowered pink fabric fascinator tucked around her chignon. I thought it was a whimsical touch added to her scalloped shift dress. I originally thought this was new but now at second look, I think it might be the same headpiece she wore back in May when the banns were read for Princess Madeleine’s marriage (take a peek here).
