One Perfect Suit and Four Hats

Royal HatsOne of my favourite items in the Duchess of Cornwall’s closet is her tailored, black, collarless suit. Over the past decade, Camilla has worn this suit at a number of sombre royal occasions, pairing it with four different hats. I am intrigued by the very different feel each of these hats brings to this same suit. Which hat do you think suits this suit best?

Duchess of Cornwall Enjoys Day At The Races

The Duchess of Cornwall attended The Royal Artillery Gold Cup races held at Sandown Park in Esher today. For this informal day out, Camilla understandably chose an informal (and warm!) hat. Describes by the designer as a”ruched crown showerproof tweed hat with faux-fur cuff”, we have seen Camilla wear several different versions of this hat numerous times. I think this version is most successful – the colouring is lovely on the Duchess and the hat coordinates nicely with her tweed coat. If she had worn this to a formal royal engagement I would not be so complimentary but for for a wintry day of leisure outdoors, I think this cozy hat works rather well.

Service of Thanksgiving for the Late Duke of Marlborough

A Service of Thanksgiving for the life of John Spencer-Churchill, the 11th Duke of Marlborough who passed away last October,  was held yesterday The Guards Chapel in London. The Duchess of Cornwall attended the service, wearing her black straw picture hat wrapped in large black ostrich feathers.

The Duchess of Gloucester topped her elegant coffee coloured peplum coat with an unexpected hat in textured orange straw. While the colour juxtaposition in the outfit was striking, I’m not sure about the protocol around wearing an orange hat to this type of event. Can anyone shed light on the dress code for a memorial Service of Thanksgiving?

The Dowager Duchess of Marlborough, Lily Spencer-Churchill, repeated an elegant black straw lampshade hat with rolled crin underbrim and crin bow at the side. The lightness of the crin underbrim adds such a pretty dimension to this hat, making this one my favourite of the trio.

While the race for second, third and fourth place was very tight, our winner ran away with the category (and with our hat loving hearts, I expect!), I’m pleased to share the results as follows:

5 The Duchess of Cambridge

Queen Máxima! While some of Queen Máxima’s hats topped your list of least favourites last year, the overall contents of her millinery closet remain so popular with royal hat watchers that she easily won this category. Several of you commented about her fearless, risk-taking approach to millinery (which accounts for her hats topping our favourite and least favourite lists) and noted how exciting it is for us spectators to see what she will wear next. I’m sure that you all join me in eagerly looking forward to what hat surprises Máxima has in store for us this year!

One of these lovely royal ladies celebrated a milestone birthday today- check back tomorrow afternoon for a look back at some of her many fantastic hats.
