Day 1 Royal Ascot: The Queen

I am so honoured to have royal milliners Christie Murray, Fiona Mangan and Jill Courtemanche join me here to chat about the royal hats at Ascot today! Without further delay, we’re going to start with Queen Elizabeth, who kicked off the first day of the races in a mustard yellow straw hat. This design has a short, sweeping brim raised on one side and is trimmed with a multi-looped straw bow and silk flowers.

Christie: What a radiant way for Queen Elizabeth to open Royal Ascot! She has her go-to crown shape and I love the angles in her brim. It opens up her face and works well with the heavier material and neckline in her coat. Just gorgeous. I think the teal and blue accents in her silk flowers also works well as an additional colourway.

Fiona: This is a nice colour on the Queen, a subtle Canary yellow and not too pastel-ly. The asymmetrical brim shape of the hat suits her better than a symmetrical brim. It is very much the same style as that garish-neon coloured hat she wore a few days ago, but it’s a lot classier, colourwise! I think the mocha flowers or the blue could have been omitted – not sure both these colours work too well with the yellow, one or other would be my preference. The subtle pearl necklace is beautiful and I love the large bold buttons of her coat. Very Queeny, but very nice!

Royal Hats: I wonder if the brown flowers are meant to reference the brass buttons on the coat?

Jill: The yellow is so smart and fresh, I like the combination of the solid straw for the base with the open weave straw edging and trim. The colors in the flowers are a nice accent with her brooch but they feel a little tight and insignificant, I don’t like the brown leaves at all. I can’t fault the shape, although she repeats it often it suits her well and the profile is very nice.

Royal Hats:  I agree with Christie that this hat’s brim shape goes beautifully with the neckline of this coat. It’s a good shade of mustard for Her Majesty but I’m with Fiona and Jill on the trim- the two colours of flowers don’t work together. Rachel Trevor Morgan usually does impeccable trimmings but something is off with these flowers.

We missed a good view of this hat during its first outing so it’s good to see it at all angles today! Now that we have had a better look, what do you think of this hat?

Queen Elizabeth’s 90th Birthday: Patron’s Lunch

Royal Hats

While the weather did not completely cooperate, 10,000 guests still gathered on The Mall for a lunch to celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s 90th birthday and her Patronage of more than 600 charities and organisations. The birthday girl joined in the festivities and watched a carnival parade with members of her family, wearing magenta hat. The design is one we’ve seen before with in silk crepe and straw, trimmed with small  flowers and striped feathers. I have quibbled about the trim on this piece during past wearings and while it’s still not to my taste, the scale and colour of the overall design is wonderful on Her Majesty.

The only other member of the family to wear a hat was Princess Michael of Kent, who wore her go-to giant white pillbox.

While there were many memorable moments during today’s speeches and parade, I thought the one where the Duke of York captured a group photo of his family on his phone was particularly delightful.

Preparing For Ascot: Joining In On Racing Fun

Royal Hats While Charles has prepared two more posts for us to enjoy before Ascot begins next week (and I’ll finish up the extended royal family hats worn for Trooping the Colour later tomorrow), he emailed me from the airport en route to the UK (minutes away from boarding his flight!) with a brilliant idea. As he mentioned previously, one of the early bets each day at Ascot is for Queen Elizabeth’s hat.

To bring you in on Ascot excitement, Charles has offered to place a £20 bet on whatever you, dearest readers, pick as your guess for the colour of the Queen’s hat each day. Any winnings will be donated to charity (details TBA) and I will set up a separate poll for each the days that Charles will be attending Ascot (the first three days). As soon as we know what colour the Queen’s hat is on the first day, I will launch a poll for the second day and so on.

Now that we have seen the Queen’s yellow and green hats (UPDATE and bright pink for the Patron’s Lunch) worn for her birthday celebrations this weekend, I thought it might be helpful to also consider what the Queen has worn on the first three days of Ascot for the past six years:

Day 1: Tuesday

Day 2: Wednesday

Day 3: Thursday

Now it’s time to vote on where to direct Charles to place his bet- what colour hat do you think Queen Elizabeth will wear for Day 1 of Ascot next Tuesday?
A gentle reminder that you also have until tomorrow at midnight GMT to vote for your favourite new and repeated royal hats worn in May.

Queen Elizabeth’s 90th Birthday: Trooping the Colour

Royal Hats

Official celebrations for the Queen’s 90th birthday continued today with Trooping the Colour which was attended by most of the British royal family. Buckle up, dearest readers- we’re in for another spectacular day of royal hats! No one, however, stood out as much as the birthday girl who looked radiant in a new hat and coat.

The hat is covered in the same vibrant harlequin green as Her Majesty’s silk wool coat with a short, upswept brim on one side and gently raised and shaped crown. The bright colour is contrasted with bright pink silk hydrangeas placed over the lower brim, studded with arrow trimmed green feathers.

There’s no two ways about this- it is a BRIGHT hat. There is, however, a great sea of red uniforms at this event and this shade of green made the Queen pop out in the crowd, something not easy to do. Colour aside, I think the proportion and shape of this design are perfect for Her Majesty and the trim is simply exquisite. It’s a bright but very balanced hat that doesn’t overwhelm the petite monarch and I think it’s fantastic on her.

The Duchess of Cornwall repeated her pale grey straw hat with upswept brim on one side. The hat is lavishly trimmed with ostrich feathers which wrap around the crown and cover the upper side of the brim. It’s a great hat to wear for a carriage ride (imagine those feathers happily swaying in the breeze!) and while the colour is not exciting, it’s a good choice to wear for someone else’s big day. We have seen this hat a lot and I was slightly disappointed not to see a new design today- I’ll have to keep my fingers crossed that Camilla has a new design waiting to show us at Ascot.

One of the big millinery surprises today was the hat worn by the Duchess of Cambridge. Kate moved out of her cocktail hat comfort zone and wore a large saucer design with high, slice brim. In blush pink straw, the dramatic shape of this piece is emphasized with its trimming, a pair or large silk roses placed under the raised brim.

It’s wonderful to see Kate try out a new millinery shape, especially one she wears so well. The scale of this piece is just right- large enough to make a statement but not too large to send it over the top (or draw too much attention away from the Queen). With her impeccable white coat dress (some of you will recognize it from Princess Charlotte’s christening last year) and side chignon, I think this hat makes for one of the best ensembles we have seen on Kate to date. Outstanding.

What do you think of these three pale hued hats at the service of thanksgiving today? We have lots of hats to cover today but I think these three get us off to a roaring start. I think the two new designs worn here by the Queen and by the Duchess of Cambridge are knock outs- what do you think?

Queen Elizabeth’s 90th Birthday: Service of Thanksgiving

Royal Hats

Fifty-three members of the British royal family attended a national service of thanksgiving this morning at St Paul’s Cathedral in London to celebrate the 90th birthday of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth. For this celebration, held on the day of the Duke of Edinburgh’s 95th birthday, the Queen wore what Buckingham Palace described as a “primrose yellow coat, dress and hat”.

Made of yellow silk wool pique, the dress and coat are embroidered in white flowers. The embroidery is continued on the upturned edge of the hat’s white straw brim while the fabric covered crown is left without embellishment. A large yellow and white silk dahlia bloom on the side provides the hat’s final flourish.

While some parts of this ensemble feel overworked to me (like the overly fussy, scalloped edge on the coat), the hat is a little underwhelming. We have seen this hat shape from Angela Kelly several times before and I was hoping for something just a little bit different for this momentous occasion. These quibbles aside, the the scale and colour of the hat work well on Her Majesty. Yellow can be a tough colour to wear but this soft shade is just right.

The Duchess of Cornwall repeated her ice blue picture hat with inverted brim edging, straw and crin bands around the crown, and a mass of flying straw and crin curled bow loops on the side. I have previously described this hat as a walking celebration and as such, it fit well with today’s happy occasion. It is, however, its fourth outing and I have my fingers crossed that Camilla has a new design waiting in the wings to début tomorrow.

The Duchess of Cambridge repeated the cream straw beret-based cocktail hat she wore for her daughter’s christening last year. Today’s outing gives us a much better look at the piece which is trimmed in white silk orchid blooms and a straw bow with flying tails.

At fist glance, this hat looks like a perfect match for Kate’s exquisite coat but at a closer view, I’m not sure the mix of different creams and whites of the two pieces work well together. A fellow blogger also pointed out  hat the flying bow tails resemble antlers, a most unfortunate comparison that I can not shake out of my head. This leaves me less enamoured with this hat- it’s a nice enough piece but I don’t think it’s outstanding.
