While much has been said about Queen Maxima’s ensemble at Prinsjesdag earlier this week, a look back through history at this event shows it is not the only time a strong (and, um, unsuccessful) millinery statement has been made. to 54 years ago yesterday to another Prinsjesdag balcony scene in The Hague. Queen Julianna sported a voluminous hat very much of the time while Princess Margriet (right) wore a multi-piece floral headpiece. Princess Beatrix’s flat crowned hat looks like it was wrapped in tulle with feathers on the brim.

sixty years to March 25, 1958 when Queen Juliana and Queen Elizabeth visited the Asscher diamond factory in Amsterdam in a matching pair of flower covered casque hats.
