Queen Margrethe Visits Faroe Islands

While our focus has been on the British royals for the past week, we have a number of royal hat outings to catch up on in other countries! Queen Margrethe continued the first leg of her summer cruise, visiting the Faroe Islands. For her arrival by plane last Sunday, she repeated a navy felt hat with rounded crown and rolled brim, edged in navy and white hounds tooth piping. The hatband is also edged in the piping, secured with a button at the side. Maregrethe isn’t one to mix and match her hats much but she paired the hat with a new navy suit (instead of the hounds tooth dress it has been worn with until now).

Queen Margrethe wore traditional Faeroese dress (see the retrospective below, taken in 1963 and 2016) for the first two days of the visit last Monday and Tuesday- some great photos can be viewed here and here at the Danish Monarchy’s website.

The programme on Wednesday was decidedly more casual and saw the Danish Queen tie a turban scarf around her head. It’s such an unpretentious move, you’ve got to love Margrethe for it.

Day 3 of Danish Summer Cruise

Last Friday, Queen Margrethe arrived in Varde for a two-day stop on the first leg of this year’s summer cruise. For this day of engagements, the Danish queen repeated her fuchsia straw hat with trio of white rosettes and navy floral double hat band. It takes a fair amount of bravado to carry off a bright pink suit and hat and Margrethe manges to succeed. I’m delighted by the glimpse of her white gloves in the first photo below, practically tucked into her jacket pocket.

Queen Margrethe appeared at engagements in Vardge on Saturday, unfortunately without a hat. She’s taking a few days off but we’ll see her again next weekend in the Faroe Islands where she’ll draw this leg of the cruise to a close. In the meantime, what do you think of her pink hat?

Another complete fail at the Daily Mail describing the fedora worn by British designer Alice Temperly to pick up her MBE as a “squashed top hat“. Seriously? (thanks Barbara for forwarding this!)

Day 2 of Danish Summer Cruise

Queen Margrethe continued her visit to Lolland today in Maribo stops at an organic farm, a rehabilitation centre, a lake cruise and the opening of a new park. For these events, she repeated her well-worn red straw hat with folded brim, square crown and ribbon daisy trim. We’ve seen this design on Margrethe many times but it’s pairing today with her white skirt, floral blazer and red accessories always works so well that the repetition really doesn’t matter.

I think this is another instance where not seeing an outfit for a few years makes us able to appreciate it more upon its return. I always love seeing Queen Margrethe in bright colours and thought she looked great today.

Danish Queen Sets Off On 2016 Summer Cruise

Queen Margrethe set sail yesterday on the first leg of this year’s summer cruise, stopping first on the island of Lolland for a two day visit. For the first day of engagements, which included her arrival in Nakskov harbour and visits to a cherry winery, museum and sculpture installation, the Danish Queen repeated her pale blue bumper hat with braided trim and side bow. This hat has been on the shelf for a few months and the break made me happy to see it again. It’s a lovely piece and I particularly admire how the felt of the hat matches perfectly with Margrethe’s silk crepe suit. Matching the colour on different textiles is tricky at best and this ensemble coordinates so well.

This is the first solo summer cruise for Queen Margrethe since Prince Henrik’s retirement and I can’t help but feel for her, although she looked upbeat and happy at yesterday’s events. You can see a short video of this visit (and see this hat in action) here. What do you think of this design?
