Birthday of Queen Margrethe

Royal Hats Queen Margrethe of Denmark celebrates her 74th birthday today. As she is an accomplished painter and costume designer, it’s no surprise that Queen Margrethe wears more vibrant and creative hats than many other royals. I love her fearless style even though some of her fashion experiments are less than successful (remember this?). Danish milliner Susanne Juul is responsible for many of the beautiful hats worn by Princess Benedikte and Crown Princess Mary and I would love to see her clean, modern style and interesting shapes on Queen Margrethe. I think this modified fedora with a wrapped, textured crown in lilac straw would be striking on Queen Margrethe. As we celebrate her birthday today, what hat would you like to see this creative Queen wear?

Turkish State Visit to Denmark

The Danish Royal Family welcomed Turkish President Abdullah Gül and Mrs.Gül yesterday for a state visit to Denmark. To greet the Turkish couple at the airport, Queen Margrethe repeated her white flat disk hat trimmed with white fur. This remains one of my favourite of Margrethe’s hats although the whole look is a bit too icy white, in my opinion, for the start of spring.

Crown Princess Mary repeated a grey calot hat with leaf trim on one side. Her hairstyle complimented this hat beautifully; I also thought this hat was an understated compliment to Mary’s grey coat and black dress. I’m not usually a fan of closely fitting calot hats (they look like helmets!) but I thought this one was very fitting for today’s welcome ceremony.

Princess Marie topped off her tailored coat with a pink cocktail hat. This hat, comprised of multiple petals and a feather pouf center, was far from understated but I suppose it worked well enough on Marie. Again, I thought her low side chignon was the perfect hairstyle for this hat. It is nice to see Marie in some colour although I’m just not sure this hat was the right one for this event.

Princess Benedikte looked elegant in a brimless black hat trimmed with a spray of black feathers. I think I may have preferred a navy hat with her coat and dress but this hat is lovely on her, especially with that hit of fuchsia lipstick.

It’s lovely to see the whole Danish royal family in attendance at these events. Which royal hat was your favourite today?

Queen Margrethe Attends the Queen’s Parade

Queen Margrethe attended the Queens parade at the Royal Guards Barracks in Copenhagen today. For this review and presentation of the ‘Queen’s Clock’ to one of the Guardsman,  Queen Margrethe repeated her red wool hat. This hat, with a plaid band around the crown and trim around the brim, feels both frantic and boring to me (quite a feat for one small hat). While it is not a hat I like very much, I have to admit it looked much better with her black fur coat hat than with the red suit jacket she paired with this hat the first time we saw it. What do you think?

Danish Queen Celebrates Church Centenary

Queen Margrethe of Denmark attended the 100th anniversary of Simeon’s Church in Copenhagen yesterday. For this centenary celebration, Margrethe repeated one of my least favourite hats. Hopefully, the festivities were not dampened by this rather unfortunate helmet.

Funeral of Countess Anne-Dorthe of Rosenborg

The funeral of Countess Anne-Dorthe of Rosenborg was held yesterday at Lyngby Church. Some of you might remember the funeral of her husband Count Christian in May this year (Count Christian was Queen Margrethe’s first cousin). The funeral was attended by Prince Henrik and Queen Margrethe who wore her small black hat with fur cuff.

Princess Elisabeth, sister of the late Count Christian, wore a black bowler hat with a ribbon-edged brim.

Christian’s brother Count Ingolf of Rosenborg wore a black fedora. His wife, Countess Sussie, wife of Christian’s brother Ingolf, wore black hat with flat brim and crown, wrapped in a wide band of textured black fabric.

Count Christian and Countess Anne-Dorthe’s three daughters, Countess Camilla, Countess Josephine and Countess Feodora were all in sedate black hats. Loosing both their parents in the past year is a tragedy for them and I’m sure you join me in wishing them peace in their grief.
