Queen Máxima Opens Tech School

Queen Máxima was in Den Bosch yesterday to officially open the Hieronymus Academy of Data Science in the former convent of Marienburg. For this event, she repeated her red felt Garbo hat trimmed with slim leather hatband.

This is the the second head-to-hem red ensemble we’ve see this week, giving an interesting opportunity to compare (see the other one here). Which red ensemble do you prefer? And, how much does the hat influence your choice?

Final Day Of Belgian State Visit to The Netherlands

The Belgian state visit to The Netherlands wrapped up today in Utrecht. Both Queen Mathilde and Queen Maxima wore percher hats for today’s calendar of engagements which included visits to a high tech campus, a food inspiration lab and Heeze Castle.

Queen Mathilde dubuted her third new hat in as many days, described by the designer as, ” a pillbox hat made out of green-blue velvet in a geometrical style called ‘Lys.'” It’s a beautiful design although absolutely not a pillbox! The rimmed saucer base of the design holds the focus of this piece, the multi-looped velvet bow. On its own, this hat is a beautiful colour, shape and scale on Mathilde and when paired with the Esmerelda Ammoun designed lace appliqued coat, the ensemble is spectacular.

Queen Máxima’s hat is one we’ve seen a few times before. The designer describes it as a “hat made out of velvet, adorned with a bird made out of paillettes and matching feathers, called ‘Sky Bird'”. While this percher design is also all about its trimmings, it as different from Queen Mathilde’s hat as a percher could possibly be! Pairing this hat with Máxima’s dark purple dress, coat and accessories made for a great contrast that drew out the hat’s pale purple trim while also allowing it to sing entirely on its own. We don’t talk enough about how important good styling is to a hat’s success and Máxima’s ensemble today is a great example of this.

I adore not only how much Queen Mathilde and Queen Máxima seem to delight in each other’s company but how they each have embraced hat wearing since coming to their respective thrones. This state visit has contrasted with another one simultaneously happening in Portugal where there has been no hint of a hat (nor was one expected). These two queens have developed their own modern takes on traditional royal dressing and I am both relieved and grateful that hats have not been lost in this process.

Day 2 of Belgian State Visit to The Netherlands

After yesterday’s very neutral hued kick off of the Belgian state visit to The Netherlands, Queen Máxima and Queen Mathilde donned some saturated colour (and a pair of new hats!) for joint engagements today.

Queen Máxima wore a new calot hat in dark burgundy velvet, trimmed in a wrap of black net veil. It’s a simple design that allows the plaid skirt star of her ensemble to stand out. Velvet always looks so luxurious and the pairing of top and hat here are beautiful.

Queen Mathilde topped her red Armani dress and coat with a wide brimmed, velvet felt hat with off-center peaked crown and gently upswept brim. We seldom see hats of this size and scale that are completely unadorned and I really like how the subtle details in the shape of this piece provide everything it needs to be interesting and beautiful. Some might think it has an off-putting cowboy vibe but I adore how the shape’s unapologetic boldness.

These two queens appear to genuinely enjoy each other’s company which makes any joint event a treat for us royal watchers. I’m curious to hear about what you think about their new hats!

Belgian State Visit to The Netherlands

King Philippe and Queen Mathilde arrived in Amsterdam to begin a three-day state visit to the Netherlands. As expected, both Queen Mathilde and Queen Máxima both wore hats, braving the windy weather with large brims.

Queen Mathilde used the occasion to debut a new design. In grey felt, her hat features a rounded crown and wide brim with gentle side upsweep. The piece is simply trimmed with a double folded silk ribbon hatband with multiple bows at the side. There’s a quirky series of indents on the underside of the brim that I suspect are meant to provide some subtle movement; from a distance, it is a beautiful shape but at close view, this detail unfortunately makes the hat look like it was bounced on several times by some little feet. It’s not a bad hat by any means but I don’t find it spectacular.

Queen Máxima repeated her coffee coloured straw hat with upswept slice brim. This is this hat’s sixth outing this year, giving it top status as Máxima’s most repeated hat in a single year. This design seems to be as popular with us fans as it is with its royal wearer and its pairing today with Máxima’s pale grey ruffled Claes Iverson dress was an unexpected but very good choice. I’m sometimes sceptical of mixing different neutral hues but the coffee trim on the dress’ neckline and belt ties beautifully with the hat.

Dutch Royals Wrap Up New Zealand State Visit

King Willem Alexander and Queen Máxima concluded their tour of New Zealand yesterday with a day of engagements in Aukland. Queen Máxima repeated her over oversized navy picture hat for the occasion, pairing it with the same navy lace dress we saw it worn with at its debut earlier this year. This remains a wonderfully dramatic hat, elevated with some subtle detail – lovely folded edge detail around the brim and slim intersecting hat bands – that  Máxima wears well.

One of the day’s events saw the royal couple observe sailing students at Princess Warf and the seaside breeze prompted Queen Máxima to wrap up to stay warm. The hat does not show well with this wrap…do check out this gallery of photos detailing the rest of the day. This leaves me with two questions for you, dearest readers- what did you think of this hat on this last day of this great state visit? Of all the hats we saw Queen Máxima wear in Australia and New Zealand, which one was your favourite?
