Day 2 of State Visit to New Zealand

King Willem Alexander and Queen Máxima continued their state visit to New Zealand today with a stop in Christchurch. Queen Máxima topped a yellow coat and printed yellow and pink dress with a rounded, brimless hat in pale pink straw trimmed with a monochrome straw hat band around the bottom and flat bow.

In preparing this post, I have found this design difficult to describe. Technically, the hat is worn as a calot and while some might describe it as a pillbox, its tall, domed shape makes me think it wasn’t intended as a pillbox, either.

The shape of this hat seemed seemed unusual enough for me to dig back through my photo archives until I found these pictures, taken March 30, 2006 during a state visit to Argentina.

BINGO. Jump over to this photo for a back view of the original hat which will explain the origin of the folded bow we see worn at the front of the brimless hat today.

Day 1 of Dutch State Visit to New Zealand

King Willem Alexander and Queen Máxima arrived in Wellington today to kick off a three day state visit to New Zealand. For their official welcome at Government House along with visits to Parliament, the National War Memorial, Park Road Post production studios and the Great War Exhibition, Queen Máxima wore a new upswept ‘slice’ brimmed hat in black straw.

I suppose it was inevitable that she would add a black version to the arsenal of this standard shape in her millinery wardrobe and this one, trimmed simply with a black grosgrain ribbon hat band, looks great. Its pairing with Máxima’s green ikat tribal printed dress is a beautiful one and I think, made for my favourite ensemble during this tour.

Day 5 of Dutch Visit to Australia

Yesterday, King Willem Alexander and Queen Máxima’s tour of Australia took them to Queensland. For their day in Brisbane, Queen Máxima repeated a ruched black silk calot hat. While photos yesterday don’t offer great detail of this hat (see it at its inaugural outing here), it’s a small piece that is far less boring than you might imagine, thanks to interesting textural movement from the beautifully draped fabric. With Máxima’s striking black and white Claes Iversen wrap dress,  the hat makes for a well balanced ensemble.

The royal couple is off for the weekend and we’ll pick up their tour in New Zealand on Monday. Until then, what do you think of this hat? And, which hat has been part of your favourite ensemble this week iin Australia?

Day 4 Of Dutch State Visit to Australia

King Willem Alexander and Queen Máxima moved on to Sydney today where their schedule included visits to the inner harbour and Opera House, Cockatoo Island, the University of Sydney and Government House.

For this less formal calendar of events, Queen Máxima repeated her modified calot headpiece in pinky-beige ruched straw.

This isn’t my favourite hat or outfit, but the balance of volume and colour is and pops of colour is good- the overall picture draws the eye in for a closer look at all its interesting pieces.  The neural hat and blouse work well with the bright skirt and necklace (clearly the stars here), allowing these pieces to shine. While I’m never going to be a great fan of orange clothing and accessories, I so admire how Máxima has embraced this important Dutch colour. Here, she wears it well.

I think most of us agreed that Máxima’s head to toe orange yesterday was a miss- what do you think about her mix of neutrals and pops of colour today? Does the small, neutral hued hat help or hinder this ensemble?

Day 3 of Dutch Visit to Australia

King Willem Alexander and Queen Máxima continued their tour of Australia today in Canberra where they visited the Australian War Memorial, the Afghan Memorial, and met with Prime Minister Malcom Turnbull and Mrs. Turunbull Parliament House. For this calendar of more formal events, Queen Máxima surprised in orange from head to toe. Her wrapped straw calot, first worn on a trip to Curacao in 2011, features a straw double half bow and feather quill. On its own, the hat is a whimsical and rather fun accessory but paired with this coral lace dress (with incredibly awkward pink lining) and all orange accessories, the ensemble is catapulted way over the top into “Apricot Pumpkin Spice Barbie” territory.

Many of us royal hat fans adore Queen Máxima’s bold and brave style and I suppose it’s inevitable with one as fashionably daring as she, that misses will occur. The ensemble was a complete miss for me, particualrly at today’s calendar of memorial visits but I would love to see this hat again (imagine it instead with a charcoal grey dress- so lovely!).
