One Hat, Nine Frocks

Royal Hats During King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima’s recent trip to Denmark and Germany, Máxima repeated her large grey felt hat with ‘slice’ diagonally folded brim designed by Fabienne Delvigne. We have seen this hat five times, each time worn with a different ensemble. Which outfit do you think works best with this hat?

Dutch Monarchs in Hamburg

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima concluded their visit to Germany with a stop in Hamburg today. For their visits to Hamburg Town Hall and famous Fish Market, Queen Máxima wore a new red dress and matching pleated hat. While the hat follows the shape of a traditional turban, Máxima wore it off-centred on the back on her head, treating it as an oversize calot hat. Since this is the fifth red hat in this style that can be found in her millinery closet, we can only guess that it must be one that Máxima likes very much.

Dutch Monarchs Begin German Visit

After completing their state visit to Denmark, King Willem Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands moved on to begin their two day visit to Germany today. For their arrival in Luebeck, Máxima repeated her grey felt hat with ‘slice’ brim sharply upturned on one side. We have seen this hat numerous times on this young queen and today, for the first time, it was paired with this tri-toned dress. The hat is a staple for Máxima and looks great on her. I think, however, the unattractive dress doomed this outfit from the start. Next week we’ll compare all the outfits she as worn with this hat and I suspect, this one will not win. What did you think of Queen Máxima’s hat and dress combination today?

Day 2 of Dutch State Visit to Denmark

For the second day of the Dutch state visit to Denmark, Crown Prince Frederick and Crown Princess Mary joined the King and Queen of the Netherlands for a visit to Samsoe Island. This visit unexpectedly saw Queen Máxima and Princess Mary in a pair of new brown fedora hats. Queen Máxima’s hat in chocolate brown felt features a slightly higher crown (with characteristic fedora pleats) and an unstructured brim; her hat is trimmed with a wide grosgrain ribbon around the base of the crown and an unstructured bow loop on the side. The slightly floppy hat contrasted with Máxima’s supremely structured camel coat and the varied shades of brown between hat, coat, purse and gloves kept the ensemble from being bland or boring.

Crown Princess Mary’s hat in beaver brown felt featured a more structured brim and a more defined ‘pinch’ at the top of the crown. Her hat was also trimmed in grosgrain ribbon with a flat, traditionally shaped bow on the side. While I like the more restrained and traditional fedora shape that this hat follows, I found the styling of Princess Mary’s outfit today rather perplexing. The brown hat paired with brown sweater, brown boots and black skirt make sense but the addition of her pale blue-grey coat, to me, does not. Unfortunately, the disharmonious outfit decreases the impact of the chic and stylish hat.

Fashion foibles aside, it appeared as though the two couples shared an enjoyable day together. Which of these two brown fedora hats struck your fancy?
