On March 22, members of the Imperial family joined the Emperor and Empress a concert by music college graduates at the Imperial Palace. Princess Kiko wore a blue bumper hat, Princess Kako a white bowler, Princess Nobuko a large white toque and Princess Akiko, a white trilby with sea foam green hatband. The same day, Princess Hanako attended the 75th Award Ceremony of All Japan Youth Invention and Innovation Exhibition. She wore a pale blue felt hat with jauntily upturned short brim. On March 29, Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko offered prayers for Emperors Showa and Kojun at the Imperial Musashi Mausoleum in Hachiōji, Tokyo. The Empress wore a grey saucer with raised rim around the back and a folded bow at the side.

King Carl Gustaf opened a ski resort on Monday in his trusty brown fedora.

I absolutely adore these very happy, bouncing pink polka dots on this John Boyd design. If I was going to Ascot, this would be my pick because I can’t imagine a happier hat to wear.

Don’t worry- I haven’t forgotten Prince Felix’s confirmation in Denmark yesterday. We’ll look at the hat and headpieces from this event in a full feature post tomorrow.

Farewell to Prince Richard of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg

Family of Prince Richard of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg were joined by close royal friends at the Evangelische Stadtkirche in Bad Berleburg, Germany this morning to pay tribute to the prince who died unexpectedly on March 13 at the age of 83. His wife, Princess Benedikte of Denmark, led her family in a black bumper hat with diagonal stripes on the cuff brim.

The couple’s eldest daughter, Princess Alexandra, wore Princess Benedikte’s black Breton hat with short, curled brim bound in silk ping and trimmed with a net tulle veil. Alexandra’s daughter, Countess Ingrid, wore a floral trimmed black headband.

I’m sure you all join me in expressing the deepest of sympathy to Princess Benedikte and the Berleburg family as they grieve the loss of Prince Richard.

A photo shared by the designer gives a great view of this design. The moulded calot base, in blue felt, is embellished with an overlay of widely woven net tulle on the bottom half. Mixed feather trim on the side completes the piece and gives the hat a pop of colour and texture.

Once inside the palace, the King, Queen and Canadian guests were joined by Princess Madeleine, Chris O’Neil, Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia (Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel are abroad on private vacation with their family). Princess Madeleine balanced her printed dress with a simple black headband.

Princess Sofia topped her sleek white dress in a headpiece not from a milliner, but from Danish jeweller Ole Lynggaard. With gold leaves and pearl berries, the headpiece contrasted nicely against Sofia’s dark hair. It’s an unusual but very interesting choice for a royal headpiece (not one I’m entirely sure is suited to a daytime event) that worked beautifully with Sofia’s pearl earrings. We’ve not seen the newest Swedish princess experiment much with millinery and it’s great to see her step out of the box with this choice.
