Swedish Royals Visit The Netherlands

King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia arrived in The Netherlands today to begin a two-day visit. They were greeted by King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima at the Royal Palace in Amsterdam.

Queen Máxima repeated the same silver headpiece and suit she wore for Princess Arianne’s christening in 2007. While I did not like this headpiece the last time we saw it (last November worn with a jade lace dress), there is something about this suit and hat that just works together. I think it might be the clean lines and round neck of that beautiful jacket that coordinate with the clean lines and round shape of the hat. Nevertheless, I thought Máxima looked so regal and elegant in this ensemble that I nearly forgot this hat is not closed on top and simply wraps in silver rings around her head.

Queen Silvia topped her red coat off with a smart black beret (if this hat looks familiar, take a peek here!). We often see Silvia in pillbox and calot hats and it was a nice change to see her in this modern, structured beret. The scale of this hat was very flattering on her, as was the styling of her hair with it. Compared to Queen Máxima it may seems a little boring but on it’s own, I think it is a lovely hat. What do you think of this pair of royal hats today?

Swedish Monarchs On State Visit to Latvia

King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden have begun a two day visit to Latvia. For their arrival this morning, Queen Silvia repeated her large two-tone brown bow fascinator with coordinating feathers . I liked how her whole outfit- shoes, suit, fascinator and THAT mink stole- came together in lovely shades of chocolate and caramel. I have to reluctantly admit that this fascinator is the last thing I would pair with a mink stole… but somehow, it worked. I think however, I might have preferred a little pillbox hat, similar to that worn by Latvian First Lady Dace Seisuma (but in a shade of brown). I thought Ms. Seisuma’s hat was fabulous with her blue suit, white cape coat and bobbed haircut. What do you think?

Note- you can see a better view of Queen Silvia’s fascinator during one of it’s previous outings, here.

Te Deum for the New Princess

The Swedish Royal Family formally celebrated the birth of their newest member, Princess Leonore, with a Te Deum service in the Royal Chapel in Stockholm. Queen Silvia wore a classic pillbox hat in powder pink to mark this celebration of her new granddaughter. I can only imagine the colour of this hat was deliberate (cue the “aaahs”) and Silvia always looks good in a pillbox.

Crown Princess Victoria wore a large white feather fascinator around her chignon. To be honest, I thought it was messy headpiece and made her look like a kagu. I want to be kind but I know she can do so much better.

Countess Marianne Bernadotte of Wisborg (widow of King Carl Gustaf’s uncle Count Sigvard Bernadotte of Wisborg) chose what looks like a hat with a wide fur upturned brim. While I am not usually a fan of fur hats, I do like how well this one paired with the matching stole and cuffs on her coat. The whole look was quite regal.

Sofia Hellqvist, longtime girlfriend of Prince Carl Philip, wore small beaded black headpiece. It’s a little small and cutesey for me but since she is not officially a royal it seemed appropriate. Since we see Sofia consistently at these Swedish Royal Family events, I can only imagine it is a matter of time before she officially joins the family.

Royal Hats at the Olympics

As the Olympics draw to a close this weekend, I thought we should look back at some of the royal hats we have seen during the Sochi games.

Swedish Royals Welcome Portuguese President on State Visit

The Swedish Royal Family welcomed Portugese President Aníbal Cavaco Silva and Mrs. Silva on a three day state visit to Sweden today.  Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel welcomed them at the airport; Princess Victoria repeated the black beret we saw just a few days ago at the opening of Swedish Parliament.

Mrs. Silva wore my favourite hat of the day, a cornflower blue wool pillbox with coordinating net trim. I thought this hat worked very nicely with her haircut and the placement was perfect (neither too far forward nor too far back, as we often see with pillbox hats). Queen Silvia repeated a large bow fascinator in chocolate and tan straw. While I am a fan of the fascinator, I think I prefer Silvia in more traditional hat shapes.
