to this day in 1941 when Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, and King George VI visited the London & North Eastern Railway’s Doncaster Works in Yorkshire. The Queen’s jaunty hat with upswept brim is the basis for a very familiar hat shape we often see on royal heads today but clearly, one that is not as contemporary as we might think!

80 years to August 6, 1939. It’s a lovely picture painted here- a wonderfully whimsical feathered hat on a young Queen Elizabeth (the Queen Mother), who appears to be having a lovely time with American First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. There’s a joyful lightheartedness here that would be obliterated less than four weeks later with the outbreak of WW II.

to June 20, 1969 when the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret arrived for the fourth day of racing during Ascot week that year. The Queen Mum’s blue hat covered in tulle ruffles and wraped in dotted veiling is memorable, but it’s the sweet daisy-covered brim on Princess Margaret’s halo hat that makes me smile.
