Day 3 of Cheltenham Festival

The third day of the Cheltenham Festival saw bright skies and attendance by two of the Queen’s grandchildren and their spouses. Zara Phillips Tindall wore her third new hat in as many days, this time a grey velour felt percher with round base and soaring feather trim. While I would have preferred a flatter base on this design and the omission of the awkward felt leaf on the side, the pairing of this grey hat with Zara’s orange coat is brilliant.

Zara and her husband Mike Tindall were joined by her brother and sister-in-law, Peter and Autumn Phillips. Peter wore a khaki brown fedora while Autumn wore what was described by the designer as a “velour felt beret with pheasant feather trim.” The feather detail on this hat is beautifully done and the piece works well with Autumn’s camel coat.

Tomorrow will see the Cheltenham Festival draw to a close for this year. In the meantime, what do you think of this pair of new percher hats?

UPDATE: Princess Anne joined her children at the races today in a brimless black faux fur cap. While not my favourite style, it works very well with her punchy red coat and graphic scarf.

Day 2 of Cheltenham Festival

The second day of the Cheltenham Festival was attended by Princess Anne and Zara Phillips Tindall, both of whom wore dark blue hats. Princess Anne repeated a trilby with extended brim that looks to be in remarkably good shape despite its age (more than 20 years). While the hat has been around the block a few times, it’s pairing with this purple velvet skirt and chevron tweed cape was new. It’s not a pairing I would like on anyone else but on Anne, it works. Her scarf does a good job of tying the ensemble together.

Zara wore a midnight blue felt cocktail hat with beret base trimmed with overlapping navy feathers. The placement of these feathers creates the most exquisite sense of movement on this small hat and the colour is absolutely fantastic on Zara. I’m less happy about the coat paired with the hat but the hat is so beautiful, it stands on its own.

So, dearest readers- what do you think of this pair of navy hats?

Day 1 of Cheltenham Festival

The annual races at Cheltenham kicked off today with Zara Phillips Tindall in attendance. Zara often uses this event to debut new hats and today, she chose a percher cocktail piece in the most beautiful shade of aubergine. Described by milliner Bridget Robbins as a “plum velour teardrop percher with silk rose and plum pheasant feather”, this hat is a stylishly dramatic piece that I thought looked fantastic on Zara. Monochrome ensembles can be tough to pull off and I love how she matched the hat’s floral embellishment to her burgundy coat, leaving the purple hat base to stand on its own in subtle contrast.

We’ll likely see a few more new British royal hats at this event before the week is out. What did you think of Zara’s new hat today?

Zara Phillips At Aussie Races

While I included links to some of the hats Zara Phillips Tindall sported last week while attending the Magic Millions races on the Gold Coast, they are so interesting I think that they are worthy of their own post. Thanks to reader FabulousBubbles who linked to design information via Rosemary Pantling who styled Zara for the event.

The first hat Zara wore is this straw cocktail hat in a raised teardrop shape. Clearly designed to compliment her striped dress, the hat is rimmed in black and trimmed with a pouf of coloured silk bow loops. While I think I would prefer the  base in a warmer tone of natural straw, it’s a very fun hat not for the faint of heart.

The second hat Zara wire was this beret-based cocktail hat in navy straw. This hat is all about the trim and the placement of navy and coffee coloured feathers gives such a grand sense of movement to what is a fairly small hat. This movement is echoed in the pattern of Zara’s dress and the two pieces go wonderfully together.

Finally, Zara topped her fantastic black blue and gold abstract paisley dress with a wonderful blue percher hat in roughly woven straw. I adore the braided detail around the edge of the piece and the way the dress and hat are linked through the textural quality of both. The shape on this piece is certainly a modern one but it’s really wonderful on Zara and I think she wears it beautifully.

We have long considered Zara to be one of our bravest royal hat wearers, dearest readers, and I think the trio of hats she stepped out in last week confirm this. What are your thoughts?
