Hat Types: The Pillbox

Pillbox | Royal Hats

Debate erupted here on the Royal Hats Blog earlier this year over Queen Máxima’s new hat style (a turban pillbox combo). We recently looked at turbans and today, we explore the pillbox.

History: Pillbox hats have long been associated with military uniforms, often worn with a chin strap in this capacity. They date back as late as the Roman Empire, when they were known as the pilleus or “Pannonian cap” and were worn by Roman soldiers. The pillbox was thrust into fashion spotlight in 1960 when US First Lady Jackie Kennedy chose one to wear to her husband’s presidential inauguration. They have been consistently worn by royals since then.

Characteristics: No brim, a flat crown and straight, upright sides.

I have always loved pillbox hats and probably always will. I love the simplicity of their design and the slightly retro vibe they carry. It seems to me, however, that the success of the pillbox is often found in the angle it is worn on the head- neither too far forward, nor too far back. I think the pink and green pillboxes worn by Princess Máxima and Princess Kiko at the top of this post are worn at the perfect spot.

What do you think of the pillbox hat?

How It’s Made: A Handmade Stephen Jones Hat

The Royal Hats Blog For those of your curious about how a hat is made, this five minute video from British royal milliner Stephen Jones’ design studio is very informative.

As a side note- reader Janae emailed me earlier this week to let me know that Mad Hatter Day was officially celebrated on October 6. Yes- there is a Mad Hatter holiday! We missed it this year but I promise, we’ll celebrate next year. If I had to choose an utterly mad hat, it might be the one created in this video.

Belgian King and Queen in Liege

King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium continued their inauguration tour of their home country with a visit to Liege today.

Mathilde wore another new hat by Belgian designer Fabienne Delvigne who describes it as “a beige velvet felt borsalino like hat“. You may remember the Italian milliner Borsalino from our history on fedoras– he is credited with the first fedora in 1857, which became his trademark hat. This fedora has a slightly relaxed brim and heightened crown which makes it look more casual.

While I like the folded bow, made from the same velvet felt as the hat, this hat just isn’t speaking to me. Or maybe, what’s speaking too loudly is Mathilde’s coat. I can’t get the image of Big Bird out of my mind.

Danish Princes Visit Gentofte

Yesterday, Prince Henrik of Denmark visited Garderhoejfort, the historic fortress in Gentofte, with his grandsons, Prince Nikolai and Prince Felix. It certainly looks like a grand time was had by this trio, who posed for the press in reproduction soldier’s hats. I think this might be one of my favourite royal hat photos of 2013!

Pink… or Pink?

Royal HatsYesterday, Queen Elizabeth wore her pale pink and blue bouclé coat dress (designed, I believe by Stewart Parvin) with a new pink straw hat. She has worn this lovely coat twice before (for Easter and on a May 2013 visit to Cambridge, shown below), both times with a pink wool felt hat trimmed with white feathers, designed by Rachel Trevor Morgan. The two pink hats have give a distinctly different feel to the ensemble- which one do you like better with this coat?
