Princess Anne Celebrates Battle of the Atlantic Anniversary

The Princess Royal and Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence visited Liverpool today to attend a Service of Remembrance at the Liverpool Cathedral commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic. Before the service, Princess Anne placed a wreath at the British Merchant Navy Memorial at the Liverpool Pier.   As Anne holds the rank of Rear Admiral as Chief Commandant for Women in the Royal Navy, she attended today’s events in uniform. As far as uniform hats go, this is a beaut, isn’t it?

Princess Beatrix Unveils Fisherman’s Monument

Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands visited Scheveningen yesterday to unveil a monument dedicated to all  fishermen who lost their life at the sea during the exercise of their profession.

Beatrix wore a black straw hat with flat crown and brim, wide ribbon strips wrapped around the crown and a large black and white poppy on the side. I thought it was a sensitive touch choosing a hat with a poppy (a flower associated with remembrance) for this event and while the brim is a little small for my taste, the hat looked very fine on Beatrix. She last wore this hat on a visit to Qatar in March 2011.

There was an interesting discussion in the comments this week about Queen Máxima history of repeating hats just once or twice (a few of us think she’s going to wear hats more frequently now that she is queen and will therefore, wear each hat more times). I think we’re also going to see Princess Beatrix recycle hats more as well. What do you think about this?

Dutch State Visit to Luxembourg

King Willem-Alexnder and Queen Máxima of The Netherlands embarked on their first state visit since becoming king and queen with a visit to Luxembourg today. Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa greeted them with great fanfare and it looks like a jolly good time was hat by all.

The women both sported dusty pink hats by Belgian hat designer Fabienne Delvigne (making me wonder if there was some behind-the-scenes fashion coordination??). Grand Duchess Maria Teresa wore a new straw picture hat with sharply angled upturned ‘slice’ brim trimmed with a wide pink Petersham ribbon hatband in the same shade. I like Maria Teresa’s hat better from the side profile than from the front where it slightly overwhelms her.

Previously Worn: This hat is new

Queen Máxima repeated  was the wrapped calot she wore earlier this year on a state visit to Brunei (she originally wore it in April 2011 for William and Kate’s wedding). While I don’t like the wrapped texture of the piece, I like the shape- more than a bandeau but less than a turban. These off-the-face styles are really lovely on Máxima and is seems that she has stumbled onto a new hat trend that works very well for her. What do you think?

This morning, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, visited Cambridge for a day of engagements.

The Queen opened the new Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology and the royal couple visited the Rosie Maternity Hospital. Elizabeth wore the same soft pink wool hat she wore this year for Easter and looked lovely. I wasn’t initially a fan of he white koosh ball pompom but now find it to be whimsical and fun. What do you think of this hat?
