Sunday Green for Queen

Members of the British Royal Family attended Sunday Service yesterday at Crathie Kirk, close to Balmoral Castle. The Queen, who stopped to chat with onlookers outside the church, wore a hat and suit we have not seen in seven years. The hat, in the same teal green fabric as her coat, featured a rolled brim and squared crown; the wide green silk sash and side bow coordinated with the brim on Her Majesty’s dress and jacket. We do not often see the Queen in this shade of green and it is wonderful on her. I love the pleated detail on the hat’s sash and the slightly squared shape of the crown sets it apart from other hats of similar scale in the Queen’s millinery closet.  What do you think of this seldom worn teal green hat?

Queen Margrethe Opens Music Museum

Last Thursday, Queen Margrethe of Denmark opened the new Museum of Music in Copenhagen. For this event, she repeated her pale blue bumper hat with ribbon and braid trim around the crown. This is the first time she has paired this hat and matching jacket with this floral silk dress and I think the combination is light and oh-so lovely. What do you think of this pairing?

Dutch King and Queen in Noord Holland

After a relatively quiet week of royal hats this week, one of the more fearless royal hat wearers brought some millinery drama to end things on a brighter note. King Willem Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands visited Noord Holland today where the Queen repeated a hat in bright magenta straw.

We have seen Máxima in other stovepipe hats before and while the shape is not my favourite, it does pack a lot of visual punch without a huge brim. Máxima wears a magenta hat better than anyone- the colour is marvelous on her and works well with her dress.

Interesting note about Máxima’s dress- it was designed by a ten year old Dutch girl name Luna, who is suffering from leukemia. The Make-A-Wish foundation linked Luna with Natan designer Edouard Vermeulen, who created her design. With this knowledge, this whole outfit suddenly becomes so much more special, doesn’t it?

British Royals Attend Memorial

Members of the British Royal Family joined the Duchess of Cornwall today at a memorial service for her brother, conservationist and writer Mark Shand, who died in April. Camilla looked very elegant in a simple black straw hat with upturned brim on one side and looped bow on the other.

Princess Beatrice wore a small black cocktail hat with beret base, trimmed with a curled ribbon tail.

UPDATE: The designer of this hat, Michelle Boyt of Butterfly Hats, has sent us a better view of this hat! As you see below, the beret base is trimmed with round, flat metal studs and three curling felt tails are attached to the side with a black and silver button. Up close, the hat has much less of a “cocktail party” vibe that several of you raised concerns about- it reads much more as a daytime hat closeup than it did from afar. It is a decidedly modern hat that I think was a great choice for Princess Beatrice and appropriate for this more serious event.

Lady Gabriella Windsor was also in attendance. While I was not able to secure a photo to share, you can see her black straw hat with indented crown, trimmed by black and white feather spines at this article at The Daily Mail. Her hat was also designed by Philip Treacy and I believe it is new.

Danish Queen in Germany

Queen Margrethe of Denmark arrived in Germany yesterday for a two day tour that saw her view a Viking ship exhibit and visit the Brandenburg Gate. For events over these two days, Margrethe donned the same hat, changing out the band around the crown to coordinate with her outfits. We saw Margrethe take this same approach to hat wearing on her recent summer cruise in Denmark and seems an ingenious way to travel efficiently.
