Queen Margrethe Attends Frue Kirke

Queen Margrethe attended a church service at Frue Kirke to mark the 70th anniversary of the death of Danish playwright and Lutheran pastor Kaj Munk (who was an important figure during the German occupation of Denmark in WWII). Margrethe repeated her oxblood red pillbox hat with black patent leather trim.

Farewell, 2013

2013 brought us a Coronation Jubilee, a Ruby Jubilee, 3 major royal weddings, 2 enthronements and 365 days of wonderful (and wonderfully awful) royal hats. As we already determined our favourite and least favourite hats of 2013, here are the top trends that defined the overall scope of royal millinery this year.

With 2013 wrapped up, I wish you a very Happy New Year. I can’t wait to enjoy all of the surprises (and groans) in store for us as we enjoy another year of royal hats!

Royal Hat Trends of 2013: #1

The Royal Hats Blog2013 was a stellar year for royal hats with major royal events in Great Britain, The Netherlands, Sweden and Belgium (along with Ascot and  royal weddings in Luxembourg, Sweden and The Netherlands). Amidst streams of beautiful, bold and sometimes bizarre royal hats, there was one millinery trend that took us all by surprise and stands out above all others.

2013 Royal Hat Trend #1- Rebirth of the Toque

At first, I was not a fan of this hybrid turban-pillbox hat. I end the year, however, knowing more about the history of the toque and having warmed up to its unique shape. While it is a hat style we have seen primarily on Queen Máxima and Queen Mathilde, Queen Margrethe appeared in a toque last month… maybe we will see more toques in 2014. All hats below (except for the black one worn by Queen Margrethe) were designed by Belgian milliner Fabienne Delvigne.

Royal Hat Trends of 2013: #2

2013 saw the enthronement of two new queens in Europe. As Crown Princesses, Máxima and Mathilde wore hats on major overseas tours and at big events at home; most of their lower profile, day-to-day domestic engagements were completed without hats. This changed with the beginning of their reigns as queen.

2013 Royal Hat Trend #2- The Young Queens Wearing More Hats

After acceding the thrones of the Netherlands and Belgium, it seemed that the first order of business for both Queen Máxima and Queen Mathilde was to order a wardrobe of new hats. Both queens adopted a more traditional approach to hat wearing this year- an approach that saw them add hats for many of their regular day-to-day engagements. While this queenly approach to hats was traditional, the hats themselves (all but one, top row right, the work of Belgian milliner Fabienne Delvigne) were decidedly modern. Please click on the photos below to link back to their original post and photo credit information.

Royal Hat Trends of 2013: #3

The Royal Hats Blog In April this year, British milliner Philip Treacy declared that the fascinator was dead. Surprisingly, he turned out to be right.

2013 Royal Hat Trend #3- Embellished Small Brimless Hats Replace the Fascinator

The once popular royal head piece was replaced this year (for the most part) with a series of quirky, embellished small hats. 2013 was a year of interesting perchers, cocktails, pillboxes, calots, berets and saucers. We saw them on everyone, in every colour in the rainbow. Embellished with bows, twirls, leaves, flowers, net, crystals, and swirls, these fun hats packed a significant style punch. I think we’ll see them throughout 2014 as well.
