Queen Elizabeth and Hat Modifications

Last fall, we looked at some interesting modifications made to hats worn by Queen Elizabeth (hats designed by Rachel Trevor Morgan and Philip Somerville). For the Queen’s departure and arrival in France today, we saw confirmation that Angela Kelly’s hats also undergo renovation. Eagle eyed reader JamesB noticed that this white piqué coat looked somewhat familiar:

It is indeed, the same coat with the navy applique bows removed. But take a closer look at the hats. The colour is the same. The shape of the crown? Same. The white bow trim is identical. The wide binding around the brim (seen closeup in 2010 below) is also the same. If you look closely at the brims on the two hats above, you’ll notice that they appear to be the same size. One is turned up, the other turned down. A number of you suspect the brim was resteamed- whatever the case, it’s quite a remarkable hat remodel, isn’t it?!

Reader Snug Harbour also noticed also made a fascinating observation- Angela Kelly’s 2012 book Dressing the Queen: The Jubilee Wardrobe includes photos of a white hat trimmed with the same silver pixel print as the dress and jacket the Queen wore for her arrival in Paris today (see below). The original hat was not worn in public and seems to have been replaced by today’s hat- a hat with similar basic shape but much sleeker trim. Between these two hats, I much prefer the one we saw today.

Thanks to everyone who shared observations and links. It was a most fascinating day of millinery for Her Majesty! I can’t  wait to see what she has in store for us tomorrow.

French Welcome for The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh

Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh kicked off their state visit to France with an official welcome by French President Francois Hollande at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris today, followed by a visit to the the Elysee Presidential Palace.

The Queen unveiled a third new hat of the day (a recent record, I do believe!). This hat, another one of Angela Kelly’s “Square Crown and Rolled Brim” designs, was covered in the same embroidered fabric as the Queen’s suit. This particular fabric is fine enough for the suit, but when added to the hat, it’s just too much. I think the overall look would have been much improved if the hat was in a different material (pink straw would have been a nice textural compliment) and scaled down a touch, as it seems a little too big for the Queen. What do you think?

* While I wasn’t such a fan of this hat, I adore the Queen’s pale pink embossed shoes!

British Royals Arrive in France

Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh arrived in Paris this morning to begin a 3-day state visit centered around the 70th Anniversary Of the D-Day landings tomorrow. The Queen emerged from the Eurostar in a different coat and hat than the ones she was wearing when left London,

The hat follows a traditional lampshade shape and is covered in the same white silk as Her Majesty’s coat and trimmed with a simple sash around the crown in the same silver print as her dress. The black piping on the sash and on the Queen’s coat is a beautifully contrasting detail that unifies the dress, coat and hat into a harmonious ensemble. I don’t usually like the Queen in white because it blends to much with her hair, but I thought this hat was so very striking on Her Majesty today.

It’s also so lovely to see the Queen in a short jacket instead of another one of the long coats she usually chooses! I’m curious, dear readers, to hear if you love this ensemble as much as I do (and if you don’t, why not!)

Queen and Duke of Edinburgh Commemorate Eurotunnel Anniversary

Before boarding the Eurostar to travel to France for their State visit, Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh stopped at St. Pancras station in London to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the opening of the Eurotunnel. To unveil a commemorative plaque, the Queen debuted a new navy straw hat with square crown and oblique brim. I particularly like the brim shape of this hat, and the Queen always looks marvelous in blue. The white bow, however is painfully twee and I would love to see it replaced by a large white bloom or two. I do adore Her Majesty’s cheeky choice of brooch today, a sapphire bow that makes the white bow on her hat almost work.

Queen and Duke of Edinburgh at Royal Horse Guards

Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh attended The Royal Marines 350th Anniversary Beating Retreat at the Royal Horse Guards Parade yesterday. For this event, the Queen repeated her lime green hat and coat that first appeared during her Irish tour in 2012. This hat, with a large and slightly raised straw brim, features an overlay of gold lace on the diagonal crown and a large gold feather trim. It is not my favourite of the Queen’s hats- while the shape and proportion are great, the combination of gold lace with this particular shade of green does not quite work for me.

Prince Philip looked handsome in miltary uniform and cap. He still cuts quite a dashing figure at nearly 92 years old, doesn’t he?
