British Royals Host Garden Party for Household Cavalry

After presenting new standards to The Household Cavalry this morning, Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh hosted a special Garden Party for the Regiment at Buckingham Palace. They were joined by the Princess Royal and Prince Harry of Wales.

Queen Elizabeth repeated a vibrant pink hat with squared crown, upturned brim on one side and a spray of pink peonies. This hat has beautiful proportions and looks wonderful on Her Majesty.

The Duke of Edinburgh again looked very handsome in a traditional morning suit and grey wool top hat. I thought the red carnation in his lapel was a natty touch.

Princess Anne looked elegant in a navy and cream ensemble. I particularly liked the contrast of her hat, which featured a cream brim and navy crown (along with navy bow and feather trimmings). The size and proportion of this hat is really lovely on Princess Anne.

And our favourite royal imp, Prince Harry, looked rather dapper in his morning suit and black top hat. He wears a top hat rather well, doesn’t he?!

These garden parties are always fun hatted events and today was no different. Thoughts about the hats?

New Standards for Household Cavalry

Queen Elizabeth II presented the Household Cavalry with new standards this morning at Horse Guards Parade. She looked lovely in her “Wedgewood” hat, a neatly tailored hat with squared crown and delicate lace trim in signature Wedgewood blue. I adore this hat on the Queen.

Prince Philip looked dashing in the officer’s frock coat and cap of his Irish Guards uniform.

The Princess Royal, who is Colonel of the Blues and Royals, was also in military uniform including the Home Service Helmet with its distinct red plume.

Today’s event was a wonderful warm-up for Trooping the Colour which is set to take place on June 14.

Queen Máxima Celebrates World MS Day

Queen Máxima celebrated World Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Day in Voorschoten today where she received the 1st copy of the Dutch edition of the International MS Atlas. For this event, Máxima  paired her red ruched straw toque hat with vibrant raspberry trousers and a cheery red and white gingham blouse. I love how the ruched shape of the hat complimented the ruched collar of this blouse

After Máxima’s less than successful pairing of ‘pants with picture hat’ last week, I must concede that this pairing of hat and trousers, in theory, is much better (a toque hat is a fantastic shape for a trouser outfit). However, the colour clash between the red hat and the raspberry pink trousers and Máxima’s unruly hair makes this ensemble an unsuccessful one in my book.

Is seems that when it comes to her wardrobe and hats, Queen Máxima’s legendary risk taking results in the most dramatic of successes but also carries great potential for flops. That’s why I love her so much and why we all can’t wait to see what she wears next. What do you think of her red toque today?

Japanese Royal Engagement

The Imperial Household Agency announced the engagement of Princess Noriko of Takamado to Mr. Kunimaro Senge today. Mr. Senge is the eldest son of the chief priest of Izumo-taisha grand shrine in Shimane Prefecture; the wedding will be held in Izumo Taisha in October. The happy couple attended a press conference today where Princess Noriko looked radiant in a bubblegum pink satin bowler hat.

Dutch Monarchs on Day 2 of German Visit

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of The Netherlands vsited Münster and Essen today for the second and final day of their quick trip to Germany. Máxima looked beautiful in a blush pink ensemble topped with the flowing gossamer pink striped headpiece she unveiled earlier this year. The first time we saw this headpiece, its effect was greatly diminished by the dowdy brown coat she wore it with. Today, however, when  paired with this tailored Natan dress, the lightness and movement of this hat shone through (aided further with those spectacular jewels!)  I thought this headpiece on Queen Máxima today was absolutely beautiful.

While this sweeping headpiece still reminds me of the hat Queen Mathilde worn for her enthronement last year, Máxima both owned it and made it shine today. I’m curious- has your opinion of this headpiece changed with its outing today, just as mine did?
