  1. QE2 looks fantastic! Grey and red are great together. We wish her continued good health and happiness as she approaches her big date in September!

  2. Queen Silvia is one very gorgeous lady, those pictures of her when she was younger are so much like her beautiful daughter Victoria today, what a beautiful group of women in this family and that also goes for PM and the littlest princess, Estelle. And she knows how to wear her hats, my favorite will always be the beautiful pillbox.

  3. There appears to be an error here in what has been claimed. It was actually King Juan Carlos I of Spain who was the first King to ever visit Antarctica when he travelled there in 2004 to visit two Spanish scientific research bases. King Harald of Norway is the second monarch to visit, but it is the first time that a Norwegian King has made the journey to Antarctica. King Harald follows in the footsteps of his wife Queen Sonja who in 2005 flew down to open the Troll Airfield and the research station.

  4. What a fun selection this week!
I think I would like Queen Elizabeth’s hat better without the feathers….just a bit too much for an otherwise pretty outfit.
The Queen Silvia review….my word, Victoria looks like her mother, doesn’t she??

  5. I enjoyed reading the material in all the links HatQueen. King Harald hit the records books by becoming the first monarch ever to visit Antarctica. Congratulations on your bravery Your Majesty! Queen Elizabeth’s hat combining grey felt and red feathers to attend church at Sandringham last weekend wasn’t to my taste. The grey is too similar to her hair, and the red feathers looked like she had a rooster on her head. This photo gallery of Queen Silvia’s style over the years was amazing. She had some beautiful, and some weird hats. Her huge sombrero made me laugh. Infanta Elena looks good in hats and was born to wear a fedora. She loves them and they love her. The Hereditary Grand Ducal Couple looked good in their hard hats as they toured a steel factory.

It was kind of the Duke of York to post his photo taken at the 50th Birthday reception for the Earl & Countess of Wessex and very kind of the Queen to honor them this way. Happy Birthday to the couple! Not only were Prince Frederick and Prince Joachim on ski trips with their families in Switzerland, but the Duke of York, his children and ex-wife and Prince Harry were all there having a jolly good time. I enjoyed the romantic look at repeatedly worn royal wedding tiaras in The Court Jeweller. My favorite of the repeated ones is the Khedive of Egypt. It is elegant and large but not overwhelming. The unique royal portraits of Dutch artist Tiety Entjes-Weij, painted on eggs, were amazing, but I don’t think this style will catch on as the small size, the irregular shell surface and the curved surface of the egg, distort the royal faces.

  6. That Silvia retrospective is hilaire! I always think she’s very elegant, but she’s also followed fashion meaning you can see the 70s and 80s coming through very strongly – and not always in a good way! Still I like a woman who’s not afraid of a coordinated turban, a hefty cloche and erm, the worlds biggest sombrero!! I guess the best bit is she looks good in all of ’em!!

    • This Week’s Extras made interesting reading. I agree with what JamesB says: February 14, 2015 at 6:58 am, that Queen Silvia retrospective was very enjoyable. There certainly were some very good, and some very bad, fashions in the 70s and 80s!
