Luxembourg Royals Join Octave Procession

Members of the Luxembourg Royal family took part yesterday in the closing procession of the Octave of Our Lady of Luxembourg, a national religious celebration that occurs every year several weeks after Easter. Grand Duchess Maria Teresa used the occasion to début a new pillbox hat in dove grey felt. Maria Teresa wears pillboxes well (her hairstyle is particularly well suited to them) and while she often favours ensembles in brighter colours, I liked this more streamlined combination of hat and silver brocade coat on her.

Princess Claire topped her raspberry red dress and jacket with a black percher cocktail hat trimmed with several feather pompoms. The black hat tied well with Claire’s other black accessories and added a touch of whimsy to her ensemble but its placement was off- instead of perching over an eyebrow on the side of the head as a percher should, Claire wore this hat just off the center of her forehead. Move it down a bit and I think we’d have a winner.

Prince Felix and Princess Claire brought their daughter, Princess Amalia, out for the royal family’s balcony appearance. The wee princess sported a tiny pink hair bow along with her quizzical expression. Adorable.

Princess Tessy repeated the lovely grey and navy saucer hat she wore for this event last year. The grey hat, trimmed with navy piping and large looped straw bows, is a great shape and scale on Tessy and she wears it well. I’m just not sure its pairing with her blousy grey jacket was a good idea. Her sleek navy lace dress last year showed this hat so beautifully and the proportion of this ensemble seems painfully off in comparison.

While several members of the family were not in attendance for the Octave procession (the Hereditary Grand Duke and Duchess were away attending WWII commemoration events across Europe), it looks like an enjoyable time was had by those who took part. What did you think of this trio of royal hats in Luxembourg?

  1. No fan of princess Claire´s cocktail hat: she would look better with a hat with a brim. Princess Tessy´s hat is beautiful, but as others have said the jacket throws off the proportions. And a hat requires an updo – the loose over-the -shoulder hair here is no success.

  2. Princess Amalia’s little pink bow and dress were the best things here. She is so cute. I thought the Grand Duchess’s pillbox looked very good, and as HatQueen said, this hat suits her hairstyle. The colour looks good against her hair as well. I didn’t like her coat. The shiny silver fabric looked like it would have been more at home on an evening dress, and the coat was bulky, and I didn’t like the strap of fabric on the chest finishing in a big bow on the shoulder. I was not fond of Princess Claire’s hat. I liked the idea of a black hat to go with her red suit, but I didn’t like the trim, which looked like the top of a pineapple gone wrong. I have to agree with other posters, that her skirt length was too short. Princess Tessy’s saucer hat was one of my favourite Luxembourg hats last year, but it doesn’t have the same impact, worn with this outfit, with its sloppy jacket. Her skirt length is also too short, as other posters mentioned.

  3. For Princess Tessy’s hat, I’m fairly sure I saw it in House of Fraser in London a year or two ago, and almost bought it. I very much approve of that fact that a hat that is completely affordable (think it was about £50) is one of the nicest!

    • If it’s the same hat I agree. Something that looks nice and is affordable. You can wear it with a nice navy or sapphire blue suit or the silvery jacket she’s wearing with a nice navy/sapphire pencil skirt (length appropriate).

  4. GD Maria-Teresa and Princess Tessy wore very pretty hats. I didn’t like Princess Claire’s hat. It looked like a pineapple or plant sprouting out of her head. Tessy and Claire’s skirts are too short.

  5. I thought Maria Teresa looked the best. I thought the grey and silver was a great choice for her. Claire looked much better last year; the color combination is good, but this cocktail hat is all wrong with placement and trimmings. Tessy also looked better last year; still love this hat, but it’s a bit odd she’s wearing it backwards this time. Overall a bit disappointed.

  6. Grand Duchess Maria Teresa: I liked her pillbox hat in dove grey felt, but the all grey coat as well was too much grey. I would have preferred that she broke it up with some bright color in her outfit or accessories.
Princess Claire: I liked the color of her raspberry red dress and jacket but the skirt length was way too short for a Royal, who is expected to dress with the dignity of their position in mind. I also thought her black percher cocktail hat trimmed with several feather pompoms, was more suited to a private cocktail party than a formal public occasion, and I agree with HatQueen about the positioning on her head being wrong.
Princess Tessy: This grey and navy saucer hat is a perfect shape on her, but the blousy jacket is awful. The hat looked best with last year’s outfit. Her skirt length is too short also.

  7. IMO Claire (and sometimes Tessy) need to pay attention to their hemlines. I know they’re still still relatively young but it’s time to lower them just a bit. Just because you can doesn’t always mean you should.

    • I was thinking the same thing about the hemlines! I come to this blog to see all the beautiful and beautifully odd hats and today I couldn’t take my eyes off some unfortunate hemlines. I’ll come back later and look at the hats!

  8. They all look fine and it was great to see pictures of the baby. I think these are the first ones I have ever seen of her, and she is adorable. I love seeing pictures of the Grand Duke and his family. They have such lovely smiles and always look very pleasant and in the moment. They very much seem to enjoy each other’s company.
