British Royals Visit Scottish Air Force Squadron

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh visited the headquarters of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force’s (RAuxAF) 603 Squadron in Edinburgh yesterday. For the final hat worn during her week in Scotland, the Queen repeated the fuchsia hat she first wore last year at Ascot. With a square, silk covered crown and light straw brim, edged in a wide stripe of silk, the hat is trimmed with a spray of light pink flowers studded within fuchsia and black striped feathers. I really like the shape of this hat on the Queen and adore the mixed use of silk and straw, which is so well balanced in this piece. The tiny pink flowers have always seemed out of place to me on this piece but is a minor quibble on a hat where the colour is glorious on Queen Elizabeth and the proportion is great. It was great to see this piece again.

  1. I love this color on the Queen; the style is perfect for her. But what I love about this picture is the way Prince Philip is turned to look at his wife, and she smiling. It is a very sweet picture!

  2. Gorgeous color which really suits the Queen. The hat, coat and dress are well coordinated. My first reaction to these photos is not necessarily to HM’s outfit, but how animated she and Prince Philip are in #1.

  3. Love love love. SO bright and cheerful and again the lightness of the brim allowing us to see Her Majesty’s face. The third picture is beautiful. I am interested to see the detail in the trim, the black edging on the feathers is great, I really like it. Good job Ms Kelly.

  4. I’m intrigued by the straw brim of this hat. Pictures 2 and 3 both show how see-through the brim is, and this makes for some interesting views. I also quite like the black-striped feathers and the silk strip around the brim, like a bumper. This is a good working outfit.

  5. I agree; the flowers seem out of place. But what a beautiful color! It is also nice to have a more open collar so that one can see more of her dress. So often her coats are very “buttoned up.”

    • My favorite hat, which so perfectly complements the queen’s ensemble–which looks so well on her. I agree about the shawl collar; very flattering. A very nice series of photographs!
