Norwegian Royals Attend Nobel Peace Prize

The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded today in Oslo and as always, the Norwegian royal family was in attendance. Queen Sonja repeated her deep teal wool rounded pillbox trimmed with a wide stripe of embroidered silk ribbon that encircles the piece and a flat bow at the back. The shape of this pillbox is still a little too rounded and bulbous for my taste but the colour is so fantastic on Sonja, the odd shape hardly matters.

Crown Princess Mette-Marit eschewed a hat once again, opting to repeat her gold headband. To tie in with her black accessories, she wove the headband with a black velvet ribbon that extended at the bottom to wrap around the base of her low ponytail. This integration of headpiece and hairstyle gets bonus points from me… but that doesn’t negate the sad fact that once again, she wore a headband to one of the biggest millinery events of the Norwegian royal year. Hop over to this post to see the other four ways she has worn this headband in the past.

Dutch Queen Opens Fish Trade Facility

Queen Máxima was in Rotterdam yesterday to open a new building for fish merchant Schmidt Zeevis. For this event, the Queen repeated her much worn charcoal grey velvet felt slice hat. We have seen Máxima wear this piece on numerous occasions (and with six different ensembles) but for me, this outing reminded what a great shape and scale it is. Máxima sometimes over-accessorizes her outfits but  the pairing of her smoky quartz button earrings was perfect with this hat

Princess Benedikte Celebrates Care Facility

Princess Benedikte was Breelteparken in Hørsholmin on Saturday to celebrate the 40th anniversary of a senior’s care center. For this event, she repeated her deep plum felt domed beret with slim magenta stripes and a pair of black feathers.  The bright stripes encircling the hat are a simple touch that add bold impact- it’s a small hat that packs a lot of visual punch. While I don’t think the feathers fit with the rest of the design (too large and too dark I think), the colour is beautiful on Benedikte.

I think it is so refreshing to start the week with an unexpected design that we have not seen before at Royal Hats! What do you think of this bold beret?

Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh visited St. Columba’s Church in Knightsbridge yesterday to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the re-dedication of the church. For this event, which included a Service of Thanksgiving and reception, the Queen wore her turquoise wool hat with tall, hourglass shaped crown and black velvet rosette trim.

While the shape of this hat still reads a little “Mad Hatter” to me, I love the colour, the crisp contrast provided by the black trim and the way the hat coordinates so well with Her Majesty’s coat. These things make it a success in my book- what do you think?
