Today’s program for the third and final day of the Dutch state visit to Luxembourg included interactions with two construction companies focused on green and sustainable building techniques, a European shipping hub, a reception with the local Dutch community and a farewell ceremony at the Grand Ducal Palace. For these events, Queen Máxima repeated her much worn warm brown straw picture hat with high upswept brim.
We’ve not seen this hat previously paired with this rosy-beige lace suit and while it might not be the first one that comes to mind as a good match, it works very well terms of colour, temperament, and style. The brown accessories bring out the warmer taupe undertones in the lace and the overall look is one of quiet elegance- perhaps something we don’t expect from Queen Máxima but that she does just as well as her vibrant statements.

While Grand Duchess Maria Teresa did not wear a hat for the earlier events of the day, she appeared at the farewell ceremony in an lustrous oyster silk covered pillbox trimmed with large, flat bow around the back. The scale is great on her (her hairstyle carries a pillbox so well) and while I think she wears more saturated hues better than this opalescent pale one, it coordinates very well with her silk floral dress and makes for another understated and polished look. I suppose not everything has to knock our socks off.

Royal Hats 
A distinct win for Queen Maxima – understated but very flattering!
If you’re gonna do all beige and neutrals, then this is how to do it! Máxima looked quite elegant, and the brown-bronze-brass colored hat, gloves, and shoes offer a good contrast and balance to the beige of the dress.
Maria Teresa looked nice, but I think the shininess of her hat was a bit too much overall; if it had been made of parasisal straw like her calot earlier in the week, it would be better. I honestly liked her red outfit from earlier in the day, and would love to see a hat with that!
Oops, and somehow I forgot Stéphanie! If she had placed this cocktail beret on her head in a better place (it looks like she’s wearing it backwards, and a little too far back), I think this would be another brilliant ensemble for her, but unfortunately it just missed the mark. I love her dress and the yellow is an unexpected color for her that she wears well.
I agree; Stéphanie’s hat looks backwards and it is just slightly off what could be a good look.
Queen Maxima’s brown straw hat is certainly a workhorse addition to her wardrobe. I am going to be different and say that I have noticed that lace dresses have become appropriate for day wear lately. I used to think that they were better suited to evening events, but that doesn’t seem to be the case now. The Grand Duchess certainly does wear a pillbox well. So many Royal ladies have longer hair, but this is an example of shorter hair which wears hats and tiaras very well. Princess Stephanie’s hat is just too yellow and too badly positioned on her head to work. But her smile is lovely. It seems that they all have a real affection for each other which is charming to see.
I like Princess Stephanie a lot, but you, HatQueen, know how a hat should be placed on the head. The Grand Duchess had it spot on with her two outfits while Maxima seemed overdressed in the first visit that morning. Her lace outfit was very appropriate for the departure ceremony.
