Princess Benedikte Celebrates Bridge

Last Saturday, Princess Benedikte attended festivities in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Egernsund Bridge. It was a full-circle moment for the princess, who originally opened the bridge between Egernsund and Gråsten in 1968 which replaced Denmark’s last chain ferry

For this event, Princess Benedikte  repeated her recently debuted oyster straw beret with twisted ruffle detail. This photos give a better view of the hat than we’ve yet seen- it’s certainly a neutral design but not a boring one, thanks to that twisted embellishment. Paired here with a white suit, the hat makes for an understated and elegant ensemble.

Queen & Duke Enjoy Polo

Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh were on hand Sunday afternoon at Guards Polo Club for the Royal Windsor Cup 2018 polo match. For this event, the Queen repeated her peach straw hat with flat crown and sharply sideswept brim trimmed with a peach wired organza hatband and multi-looped side bows and silk flowers..

Orange is not my favourite on Her Majesty – this shade’s coral undertone is more flattering and makes it my favourite in her current inventory of orange and peach hats. I also really like the presence of this hat’s slightly-larger-than-usual scale and the wonderful contrast between the its crisp angles and very soft, romantic trim. I still think it’s a great addition to her millinery closet.

Luxembourg National Day

Members of the Grand Ducal family took part in celebrations of their national holiday on Saturday. Following the official ceremony and military parade, the family attended an inter-religious Te Deum mass at the Cathédral Notre-Dame de Luxembourg.

Grand Duchess Maria Teresa led her family in a sleek pale lilac dress and jacket topped with a matching percher hat.

In straw, the large button base is trimmed with a pair of entwined straw twists. Maria Teresa’s placement of the hat is spot-on and the scale is good on her. While some might year for a hat that makes a larger statement, I though this piece carried on the sleek tone set by her outfit and the pieces complimented each other, and their wearer, well.

Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie wore a soft pink brimmed hat with shallow, almost saucer crown and sideswept brim, trimmed with silk ranunculus and hydrangeas and pleated green straw nautilus-like spirals on the brim’s lower side. While this hat is all about that beautiful, painterly floral trim, I also like the scale, gentle shape and soft colour on Princess Stéphanie. Sylvia Martinez has provided some new shape and styles of hats for the Hereditary Grand Duchess and it’s wonderful to see their millinery collaboration growing, particularly with such great results as this.

Princess Claire topped her lilac eyelet lace dress with a bright pink silk flower fascinator tucked behind her right ear. The headpiece’s scale and placement is great and while the colour is lovely on Claire, I’m not sure about the colour balance between the bright piece and her pastel dress. I think the softer pink floral headpiece she wore it with at National Day in 2016 made a more successful pairing.

Princess Alexandra also paired her dress with a floral headpiece. A rose shaped flower in pale pink rolled fabric, the headpiece is trimmed with pink silk leaves and pairs harmoniously with her dotted pink dress. It’s a good piece that’s good on Alexandra and good with her dress… good but slightly boring.

Some have suggested this pink headpiece is the same as the one Princess Claire wore for National Day but close up views show that the fabrics, scale, center detail and use of leaf trim are all different.

It’s always lovely to see the whole family at this event. I think my favourite hat is fairly transparent in this post- what do you think of these designs?

This Week’s Extras

While we’ll take a detailed look tomorrow at hats from Luxembourg’s National Day Celebrations and The Guards Polo Club at Windsor, here are some of this week’s hats and royal happenings we missed during our focus on Ascot.

Queen Sonja in her bunade Tuesday to open an exhibition on these folk costumes (Royal House of Norway)

On Friday, Queen Maxima openned a new building in Enschede that will act as a meeting place for sports, catering, art, culture, craft and entrepreneurship initiatives. For the opening, she repeated her large upswept hat in natural straw.

Yesterday, Prince Albert and Princess Charlene attended a “Grimaldi Historic Sites of Monaco” meeting and brought their young twins, in folk costume. Notice the very sweet straw bonnet on Princess Gabriella

The following non-Ascot designs caught my eye this week:

Pink hat with leather crown and brim of 400 hand-cut feathers by Australian brand Millinery By Mel
Black open weave bergere hat with cream silk roses and quills from John Boyd Millinery in London
Teal and taupe striped bandeau from Australian milliner Felicity Northeast with amazing sinamay loop trim
Pink ombre dyed straw hat from Melbourne milliner Stephanie Spencer
Lily Collins in an open weave natural straw beret percher with exquisite floral trim from Stephen Jones
Classic white straw boater with wide black hatband and Chanel-esque rose from Maggie Mowbray Millinery
Lovely lime mushroom brimmed design with silk bow from Dutch milliner (and friend here!) Wies Mauduit

And after so many elaborate hats this week, I’m drawn to this simple, classic and very wearable design from Czech milliner Jolana Kotabova

 Royal Hats

Poignant and heartfelt message from Queen Maxima, returning to work following the very sad loss of her younger sister.

We don’t often see political messages from royal women- interesting and admirable to this one formally released from Grand Duchess Maria Teresa

Sweet snaps of Princess Charlene and Prince Jacques last weekend after the Riviera Water Bike Challenge 2018 which will help fund one of Princess Charlene’s foundation’s projects in Burkina Faso. Prince Albert and Andrea Casiraghi also took part and Princess Gabriella was also spotted cheering on the sidelines.

Prince Jaime of Bourbon Parma is wrapping up his time as Dutch Ambassador to the Vatican and shared these lovely photos of his family’s farewell with the pope.

And finally… while we’ve all come to appreciate all the work British royal photographer Chris Jackson does to bring us fantastic shots of hats in motion, this tweet from Lesotho, where he accompanied Prince Harry to document a short trip, shows he he is about far more than just getting the right shot.
