Members of the Norwegian royal family celebrated their country’s Constitution Day national holiday today with an appearance on the balcony of the Royal Palace in Oslo, as they have done in years past.
It was a tale of two hat styles in Norway today with King Herald and Crown Prince Haakon in black silk top hats and the ladies in a pair of pillboxes. Queen Sonja’s design is a streamlined one in brilliant red.

Crown Princess Mette-Marit but repeated her low height, ivory felt pillbox. Photos today show the crown of the hat has a very slight domed shape.

It’s nice to see Sonja in this bright red color, even if her pillbox doesn’t excite me.
Except for its most recent previous outing, Mette-Marit has worn this hat with her hair up in a severe style, and I like this relaxed look with her hair down for something completely different.
Harald and Haakon are in fine form in their respective top hats, like always.
Love to see the royal family in bunads. The young prince didn’t participate but that’s probably due to his age and that’s OK. My mother is Norwegian so today is a holiday at home. No lutefisk for me though!
I am very happy to see Mette-Marit in a hat. It does seem a little far back on her as per usual. Queen Sonja looks great in the red pillbox and her placement of the hat looks good, also.
Good photos of Mette-Marit’s hat here
